Independent Study Project: Homeostasis, Maintaining Balance

In these investigations, students will be involved in the initiating and planning of a scientific study. You will be performing library research, then designing and implementing a study in which you will record, analyze, interpret, and communicate your research and data. A formal written report as well as an oral presentation of this information to your peers will be required. Students will be expected to demonstrate skill in: - using safe lab techniques - designing properly controlled investigations to test hypotheses concerning selected variables - describing, recording and interpreting data from the above investigations - writing a formal report of their findings - preparing and teaching information to their classmates on their study topic

The area of Homeostasis gives opportunity for varied and interesting research. Many different types of organisms are available for study, from invertebrates such as worms or insects, to larger organisms like plants, mice, dogs, cats, horses, or humans.
Topics that can be investigated are not restricted to this broad area, but might look at areas such as • homeostatic processes involved in maintaining water, ionic, thermal, and acid-base equilibria in response to both a changing environment and medical treatments (e.g., investigate the feedback mechanisms involved in water balance or thermo-regulation; study the buffering system of blood; investigate the operation of the nervous system or endocrine system; study how chemotherapy affects homeostasis); • the mammalian immunological response to a viral or bacterial infection; • the impact of environmental factors such as allergens on homeostasis within an organism. • physiological effects of drinking coffee or using sports drinks and performance • invertebrate responses to external stimuli (e.g., instinctive

    Homeostasis is simply how the body keeps conditions inside the same. It is described as the maintenance of a constant internal environment. Generally, the body is in homeostasis when its needs are met and it’s functioning properly. Every organ in the body contributes to homeostasis. A complex set of chemical, thermal, and neural factors interact in complex ways, both helping the body while it works to maintain homeostasis. In homeostasis there is the concept of Negative feedback which ensures that, in any control system, changes are reversed and returned back to the set level. There are four different homeostatic mechanisms for regulation these four are the heart rate, breathing rate, body temperature and blood glucose levels. Negative feedback system is made out of receptors to detect change, a control centre to receive the information and process the response and effectors to reverse the change and re-establish the original state.     Homeostasis is a term used to describe an internal environment being in a state of constant conditions, such as constant temperature, pH, and etc. It is important because staying at an equilibrium requires the least amount of energy and provides the perfect environment for desired reactions to occur. If at any given time, the equilibrium is disturbed and the homeostasis shifts, then internal environment becomes stressed and favored reactions do not take place.     Homeostasis is the existence of a stable environment in the body for survival. This process is always regulating bodily functions in order to keep the body in optimal condition. When conditions change a receptor senses and sends a message to a control center. The control center processes the information and sends an appropriate command to effectors. These effectors will respond to the command which will stimulate a positive or negative response. A positive response will stimulate the increase of the change. For example if a person got a cut, the response from the effector would be to help stimulate clotting in the cut area. A negative response would attempt to cancel out the change, such as when the body becomes too hot or cold. When this happens the effectors cause veins and arteries to expand or narrow in order to increase or decrease blood flow. The way homeostasis works is very similar to the way cruise control works. While traveling on a relatively normal road, the cruise control will keep the car at a certain speed and only use a certain amount of fuel. As the car travels on a hill, sensors notice and send the information to the engine. The engine will send a command to the necessary places to send more or less fuel into the engine in order to maintain speed.…
