Thaipusam
Thaipusam Celebration Today, me and my friends are going to the “Sri Balathandayuthaphani Temple” for our moral assignment. The temple was located in Seremban area. This year, we are not going to the Batu Caves for celebrating the Thaipusam because we are not free on that day. According to the request from our lecturer, he hopes we can know more the culture and tradition of the Indian races. So we have decided to go to this temple for asking the information of the Thaipusam. The reason that we choose this temple is because the temple is full of history and the abbot of the temple is very experienced. We are going there by car and we go there in the night time. Because the temple has two different time open to the public. One is afternoon period and one is night period. We are going to the temple on the night time is because we have the class in the afternoon. So, when we reach the temple, we saw a group of people inside the temple and they all are Indian believer. At the same time, we saw a golden chariot in the temple and they are going to have a function with the golden chariot every night. They believe this function will bring them luck and blessing. We also involved in this function because we like to know about more to this function. There has some believer pull the golden chariot around the temple and it will stop four times. The believers have to follow the golden chariot. Each time the golden chariot stop, the believers have to stop too and have a prayer. The frame of golden chariot is made from teak, and covered with a copper plate covering. The covering has been coated with gold, utilizing to 2.5kg of gold.
After the function, we ask the abbot of the temple about the Thaipusam Celebration. The abbot tells us Thaipusam is a Hindu festival mostly celebrated by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February). The festival commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a Vel "spear" so he could vanquish the evil
