The Dangers of Texting While Driving
Over the past few years, texting while driving has become a major issue for many Americans across the country. It has been the cause of many deaths and injuries and is a huge distraction for drivers. Texting while driving is said to be as dangerous as drunk driving. Many campaigns have been developed to further reduce the rate of accidents caused by texting while driving, but these are not taken to notice by the thousands of people taking their chances and answering a simple text that results in a terrible accident. Today in our society texting is a major means of communicating with one another. Most people in our community own phones that include the advantage to use text messaging. Text messaging is a fast and easy form of communication. The second we hear that vibration we forget about everything else and our main focus is on that text. It suddenly becomes our top priority. Sadly there are drivers that don’t think twice before they choose to look at that text. They don’t seem to realize the consequences that may result from their actions.
Texting while driving is a major distraction for drivers on the road. When a person texts and drives their focus comes off the road and the vehicle causing them to remain concentrated on the text. According for the Center for Disease Control, each day in the United States more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,060 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Texting while driving has proved to be one of the biggest distractions on the road. A study by distraction.gov showed that 11% of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. This age group has the largest population of drivers who were distracted. Since texting while driving has become such a huge issue in America, some states have decided to pass laws in order to prevent future accidents. According to Hands Free
