Texting while driving has not really been a big concern until recently. Law enforcement have realized that the percentage of texting and driving accident have risen over the past years. Texting while driving has been getting ignored but now it’s time to bring it to the light to save some lives. Texting while driving is the #1 wrong thing to do while driving than anything else (Cell Phone). Teenagers do not realize how dangerous texting and driving is; it can cause injuries, distractions, and even deaths. Texting while driving is a growing trend, and a national epidemic, quickly becoming one of the country’s top killers (Distracted Driving Laws). Every year there are one million six hundred thousand, accidents per year and of those accidents there are three hundred thirsty thousand, injuries per year (Distracted Driving Laws). Eleven teen deaths every day due to texting while driving (Distracted Driving Laws). Nearly twenty-five percent of all car accidents are due texting while driving (Distracted Driving Laws). Texting while driving is about six times more likely to cause an accident than driving intoxicated (Distracted Driving Laws). Texting while driving is the same as driving after four beers (Distracted Driving Laws). Texting while driving takes away your attention for five seconds enough time for you to travel the length of a football field (Distracted Driving Laws). Texting while driving makes you twenty-three times more likely to crash (Distracted Driving Laws). It’s the same as driving blind for five seconds at a time (Distracted Driving Laws). It slows your brake reaction speed by eighteen percent (Distracted Driving Laws). While teenagers are driving they spend about ten percent of the time outside the driving lane they’re suppose to be in (Distracted Driving Laws). Over sixteen thousand people have died because of texting and driving (Distracted Driving Laws). Teen drivers are four times more likely than adults to get into car crashes or near crash events directly related to texting while driving (Distracted Driving Laws).
As of May 2012, ten states, the District of Columbia (DC), Guam, and the Virgin Islands have instituted a hand-held cell phone ban for all drivers, with all but two of them making it a primary offense (Distracted Driving Statistics). Text messaging is banned for all drivers in thirty-eight states, the District of Columbia, and Guam, with all but three of them making it a primary offense (Distracted Driving Statistics). An additional five states prohibit text messaging by novice drivers (Distracted Driving Statistics). Law enforcement should enforce tickets for texting and driving more. Cars should have devices that help you speak and text while you’re driving. Cars should also have programs that would stop you from texting once you get in the car. Teenagers should have to drive a car and text to show them how they can get hurt very dangerously just by texting and driving.
Teenagers that feel they need to text while driving possible may not benefit from the police issuing tickets to them, but their parents will. The parents will benefit because they would know that the police are trying to protect their kids from danger. If cars where to put in device that would help you speak text other drivers would benefit. The other drivers would benefit by, they would not have to worry about people driving in their lanes because their trying to text. If the cars would come with text stoppers programmed in them, then the teenager, parents, and other drivers would benefit because it would help people focus more on the road. Showing a teenager what could happen would show them that nobody is save behind a one word text. Anybody and everybody can get seriously hurt or even death. In order for you to learn something sometimes you have to learn a lesson and that’s where the showing them what could happen if they text and drive comes in. Teenagers would object to the solutions because they feel I passed my driving test I should be able to drive how I want to drive. Law enforcement would object because they feel that they have to worry about more crimes they cannot worry about who passing by texting. Some teenagers would not want to go through the class because they feel it would be boring and not important to them. Texting and driving can lead to your best friend, mom, or even grandparent getting seriously injured or killed. The text that was sent to you will always be there waiting for you to reply, but you taking your eyes of the road for five minutes will maybe not let you be there to reply to that one text. If the law enforcement were to be stricter with tickets for texting and driving it will make teenagers know they cannot do it. They would get tired of paying for tickets. Some people learn by making mistakes but never let a teenager learn by making a stupid texting and driving mistake.
Most teenagers ignore the restriction signs for texting and driving (Texting). People don’t realize that more deaths are being cause just because someone is texting and driving. Getting in a car accident just do a “hey” text message that can wait until you meet your destination is not something you want to go through. You may be lucky and not die but you can get seriously injured. Teenagers don’t realize how dangerous texting and driving is; it can cause injuries, distractions, and even deaths.
