Aim of the curriculum
This curriculum framework is intended as a resource and planning tool for use in course planning, implementation and evaluation by teachers and curriculum support staff.
Learner needs and levels
This framework is prepared for young (16 - 35), motivated learners aiming to do further studies or seek employment. They all have L1 literacy and basic L2 literacy. They have already had a previous AMES course and are not, therefore, On-Arrival students. They want to further improve their English language skills so that they could go on to higher education, work-related study and training, or feel more confident in looking for jobs.
Goals/Objectives
This framework aims to assist learners to develop sufficient English to do further study and improve those skills necessary to obtain employment.
Content
The content is to be selected on the basis of learner needs (for employment and further study, space will be allowed for individual needs and interests – particular field of study /area of employment) and learner English proficiency. It will be task-centered and focus on real-world tasks.
Teaching /Learning Process
Besides the normal learning activities of carrying out a task in the classroom, in group work or in pair practice, students will also be asked to carry out the task in real-life situations and report back, orally and in writing, to the teacher and other learners in the class. Students will be given specific worksheets to guide them through all non-classroom tasks. They may seek as much assistance from the teacher as they require with a new task.
There will also be tasks carried out to increase learners’ awareness of learning strategies. Students will be encouraged to use multi-media
