Child Obesity rates decline Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity remains an epidemic that can lead to both immediate effect like cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and bone and joint problems and long-term effects heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis As a result, experts have turned to a variety of measures to instill healthy eating and fitness habits at an early age, particularly among low-income youngsters According to Washington post Aug. 7/2013 “after decades of rising Child Obesity rates among low-income U.S. preschoolers declined broadly from 2008 to 2011. Nineteen states and U.S. territories had a lower percentage of obese children aged 2 to 4. This decline was most likely attributed to three broad trends. More fresh fruit and vegetables instead of sugar-laden juices are among the healthier foods recently mandated in federally funded maternal- and child-nutrition programs.” As we learned in chapter four energy and metabolism, the report child obese is the result of normal human metabolism reaction. The states change breakfast to low-income U.S. preschoolers to fresh fruit and vegetables instead of sugar-laden juices results less energy intake or less carbohydrate foods reduce the accumulation

    The increased prevalence of childhood obesity has been known for over three decades. Despite this awareness, the obesity rate in children has increased two- to three-fold during this same time period. The current child obesity rate in the United States appears to be leveling off but obesity prevalence still remains high and above national goals (Farris et al, 2011). Based upon the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data, the current national prevalence of child obesity is estimated as follows: ages 2-5, 12.4%; ages 6-11, 17%; and ages 12-19, 17.6% (Farris et al , 2011). An excessive increase in BMI during early childhood may be related to the development and acceleration of adverse cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors (Pedrosa et al, 2011). The current national goal for the obesity rate in children is 5% of all children who are obese have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease when compared to their normal weight peers the risk of being obese as an adult is greater if a child’s weight status tracks into adolescence (Farris et al , 2011).
