Temporary Employment Agency or Television Sitcom “The Office”

This is “great!” A place in the world, I can go to that is like a job factory. The perfect job was waiting just for me. I did not need an education because it was my dream job and I knew how to do it. I was the only person that could fill the position so an application was an unnecessary process. In my mind I pictured it being as it is in the movie Beetlejuice, when he went to be employed as a ghoul. Unlike the movie, this was a place for people that were alive and wanted to work. People do not go to a temporary agency to fulfill an unemployment requirement because when someone goes to a temporary agency they go in unemployed and come out employed. I had it all worked out in my mind. The temporary agency’s office was big and elaborate. It had water fountains that stood in each of the four corners. A place that was very relaxing. I heard the faint sound of jazz playing in the background. The people that worked at the temporary agency were nicer than the environment. Everybody was so nice and eager to give me the perfect job. They knew that I was coming, so they waited for me to get there. I would go in unemployed and come out employed. That was a great feeling. I couldn’t wait to get to the temporary agency’s office. I got to the temporary agency’s office and I was still excited, anticipation was written all over my face. However, reality sat in when I opened the door to the office and it was like walking on to the set of the television sitcom “The Office.” I saw Pam Beesly, Dwight Schrute, and Michael Scott. “The Office” might have a statue of Dark Vader lounging next to an applicant. A temporary agency will have a useless picture of a pear hanging on the wall or maybe a cheap picture of a horse since I live in Kentucky. Somewhere hidden in the corner

It was a Thursday morning in November. I woke up, got dressed and got ready to take a taxi to 42nd Street in Manhattan with my mother. I was so upset that I had to leave to upstate somewhere I had never been and the thought of living there? Lord knows I wanted to throw up so badly. When I got to 42nd Street I saw the guy that I had an interview with. He said, “Hello Nikki. Are you excited to go to Job Corps?” I lie and said yes. When it was time to leave I said goodbye to my mother and got on the bus.…

I remember it all. I can still feel the warm summer wind gliding my sun-kissed cheeks. I didn’t usually have all of my windows down while I drove, especially not on the way to my lackluster burden, otherwise known as my job. Today was an exception, however, summer was quickly approaching its end, and I would be once again bound by the chains of high school. I decided to cherish every little bit that I had left. As I pulled in, I thought to myself, “just another ordinary day of work.” Oh…

Unemployment. Only one man is unemployed in a city of 100,000 is his personal trouble, and for its relief we properly look to the character of the man, his skill, and his immediate opportunities. But when in a nation of 50 million employees, 15 million men are unemployed, that is an issue, and we may not hope to find its solution within the range of opportunities open to any one individual.…

As we rode along, I watched the skyscrapers turn into trees, and the sidewalks turn into grass. We went from urban to rural in an hour. During the ride, I thought about my career as a writer, and how earlier that day I was talking aloud to my interactive voice typewriter. I could not come up with anything noteworthy, so I left my house out of frustration. I was headed to a park for inspiration when I ran into Otis.…

It was in the muggy day in the middle of July and I was stuck outside watching a bunch of bratty kids run around in the woods playing tag and hide and seek. A few months earlier, I was applying for the Camp Counselor job at the M.E Lyons YMCA, which would be my first job. In the beginning of the summer, I had no idea that being a counselor would be extremely challenging, but very rewarding in the end.…

I have never expected to finally be leaving here’s how it happened. I lived in a toy store called “the best place on earth”. When you walk in the front door it smells like lemon air freshener with all the cashiers welcoming you, and then you walk down the aisles where there is toys everywhere. Then you get to the back where the bosses office is, and it smell like old moldy microwaved burritos and hard churros lying on the floor. With him shouting on the phone to somebody, saying that the shipment better be in by tomorrow.…

I started getting ready at eight o’clock. My anxiety rose through the roof as I paced around my room. The same four words ran through my head with increasing distress: this was a mistake. I woke awoke that bright sunny day to the sound of birds chirping and the sun shining upon my face. It was a peaceful morning, and I relaxed in bed for a couple of minutes and looked forward to my day. I wondered what I would do throughout the day, and like a typical teen during summer break I decided to go out to the mall, grab ice cream, and dip in the pool later that night. Unfortunately my mother informed me that I had to go job hunting.…

It had been a frigid all day long and the closer it got to the end of the day the colder it got. I had been nervous about the interview since the day before. The interview had been set up for it to be after school in a classroom. Butterflies had been fluttering around in my stomach and the closer it got to the end of the day the more anxious the butterflies had become. I was in my final class trying to focus on writing my final essay before christmas break but it was no use. I was more focused on going over what I would say and do during the interview that was coming up closer than I expected. The final bell of the day had rung and off I went to the designated room which was 232 where I would meet and interview my veteran. He had been teaching…

I was fully optimistic that the day would go well, but it did not fall in the plan that I believed it would. It was the same routine in a new environment. My first day at Larned High School started like every first day before me. The principal, Mr. Langdon, gathered all the students and welcomed us into a new school year. The speech as long but informational. It was a familiar speech that I had heard every first day of school. Unfortunately, this familiarity would end, and now I was stuck roaming the halls in a new school looking for my first class.…

Some 8.5 million people are collecting unemployment insurance, including 4.8 million receiving federal benefits. So how do we get Americans back into work? Our department has put forth a $12 million dollar budget proposal to do just that. This plan includes special training and employment opportunities for those who are jobless, displaced workers and those communities that are defenseless and vulnerable. It is time that the government gives back to its community instead of taking. Our plan advocates that unemployed workers have to be made more competitive and more appealing to business through training and employment programs. It allocates a budget of $6 million to be spent on such programs that would be targeted at preparing workers to work in places that where high paying salaries and growth prospects are high. Why let inexperienced individuals try and get a job that they wont last long in. Our plan gives the opportunity to prepare people to get into jobs that will last them their whole lives. This may seem like a lot of money spent, but it is being spent on programs that will last forever because fixing unemployment is not going to happen overnight. This budget will put money towards useful programs to help the growth of our economy and the people in it. Many people don't even have the…
