I can say I was able to identify with Amy’s
The story is told from three different POVs: From Libby Day in the present and from Ben and Patty Day in 1985. There’s a fourth narrative near the end that provides a surprising twist. You jump from past to present, slowly piecing together the story as Libby does. Whilst I’m not the biggest fan of multiple perspectives and constant flashbacks, I think that Gillian Flynn has this technique nailed down to a tee. It was a day in the year of 1985 when Ben – Libby’s older brother – allegedly murdered three members of his own family – including his mother, Patty, and two of his younger sisters – in cold blood. Only Libby somehow managed to escape the massacre. It was Libby’s coerced testimony that condemned Ben to a lifelong imprisonment. Now, after…
Amy’s mom came to America after losing everything in China. With the belief that you could be anything you wanted in America, Amy’s mom prepared and coached Amy into becoming a Chinese Shirley Temple.…
The documentary, Two American Families address the financial issues many Americans are still facing today. CBS wanted to capture and tell the world of the struggles Americans are facing when multinational corporations are moving their companies overseas, leaving people in America unemployed for cheaper labor. Business owners try to make the best decisions for the companies, but why don’t they ever make the best decision for their employees? Families expressed the "American Dream" they believed growing up was not what they expected. Families were well off when the country’s economic rate was at its best success, however, when corporations began to take their business overseas in countries such as China, many American workers were left without…
The main story line in Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is that Amy is framing her husband Nick for her murder. She sets up an elaborate scheme to hurt him and to exact revenge for making her move away from her great life in New York for a small town life that she doesn’t fit into and because he is having an affair behind her back. . Amy believes she should not be treated in this way and deserves…
“What Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until you’re good at it.”(411) The Statement from “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior,” by Amy Chua, is an opinionated article on western and Chinese parenting. In her article, Amy Chua compares the way Chinese parents raise their children and the way American parents raise their children. She shows both the positives and negatives on both sides of parenting. Amy Chua uses Logos, credibility, and Compare and contrast in her passage. Each rhetorical strategy is supposed to help the reader have a clear outlook on the two parenting styles and which parenting style is preferred. The authors give stable credibility, but lacks of an objective in her comparing and contrasting, and lacks reliable…
The "sexual natural attitude" that is reflected through our Western culture differs greatly from that of other cultures. Our sexual natural attitude includes human beings falling into two distinct and complementary categories: male and female. Our culture denotes normality as only when two people of different genders have sexual relations or get married. It is a male dominated society where norms are often based on androcentric beliefs (McGann 2005). Our society labels people as heterosexual or homosexual with many inherent stereotypes that go along with the word "homosexual". An alternative point of view is the "sexual script" theory which states that sexuality is socially learned (Seidman 2003). In the film Chasing Amy, many features of the "sexual natural attitude" are both evident as well as challenged. The film also shows many of the characters to have "sexual scripts" which seem to be based on age, race, and class.…
"We admire people to the extent that we cannot explain what they do, and the word admire then means marvel at." This quote by B. F. Skinner shows exactly how I idolize certain people. I admire those who can make me realize who I am, who understand where I stand on and who is not afraid to say what is on their minds. One incredible individual, who I have met recently, changed the way I looked at the world. Ms. Lena Parks has a different air around her that I do not find most in others. I applaud her for the discipline she imposed on herself to reach her goal, for her sense of humor, and for her individuality.…
On November 20th, I attended Awesome Tapes from Africa at BAM Cafe in Brooklyn, NY. When I first arrived, the DJ, Brian Shimkovitz, hadn’t started his set yet so they were just playing regular music to pass the time. But I was shocked to see so many people had showed up just to see him. This was the first time I’ve heard of him and I was excited to see what he was going to play. As I was waiting for the show to start, I was expecting to see him walk in with guards or as soon as he walked in for everyone to ask for an autograph but I noticed that he was just walking around like he was also waiting for the show to start. He walked past me a couple times before I actually noticed and recognized him. From what I gathered from the BAM Cafe and…

Have you ever stopped and thought about how the views and roles of women have changed throughout several generations? I certainly have. Amy’s isolation and disconnection from her culture and other characters worsened after Charlie’s death. When Amy wondered and groped about Charlie’s death, no one could tell her what had really happened or how he felt or what he was thinking before he died. Amy remembered back to when the news came to her of Charlie’s death. It was two officers at her door, Amy welcomed the officers in and they told her to have a seat. Only one officer spoke and said “on the Bruckner Boulevard Expressway….head on collision…dead on arrival… didn’t suffer too long…nobody was with him, but we found his wallet.” Amy didn’t want to believe it she was saying the officers were lying, but she finally realized that it was reality and that Charlie was dead. Charlie’s death really hurt her deep and worsened her emotionally.…

I had notice this face from a few weeks back when I came in her trailer. She had nothing unusually that she wouldn't have dress on before. Her head was down, and she made her best attempt to seem happy. Something in my heart knew something was wrong, but having fun in her trailer and watching t.v shows that I could not see in my house because of my chores over weigh the little things I noticed.…
