Teens Should Be Tried As Adults
Teen’s lives are being ruined when they are tried as adults. Their brains are not as developed as adults. Their sense of right and wrong is different than adults. Teens take time to develop and can easily be treated in rehabilitation. They are not as adults, so they simply shouldn’t be tried as one.
Everyone makes mistakes, especially teen kids. Juveniles should be able to get help and be taught the right way. Most teens do not think about their consequences of their actions as adults do. Juveniles tried as adults were more likely to be incarcerated and incarcerated for longer than those who remained in the juvenile system (Bishop). Also, study shows teens that remained in the adult system would re-offend within two years, and commit a more

In a teenage brain, they are not fully formed yet. Teens do not understand the fundamental differences between good and bad (Steinberg). Young teens were given intelligence test and hypothetical legal questions and situations. Studies show one-third of those eleven to thirteen and one-fifth of those fourteen or fifteen could not understand the process (John D. and MacArthur). Many of these teens who commit these violent crimes are not being taught right from wrong by their parents. Teaching your kids right to bad at a young age will help influence them to be a better person. It’s easier to teach young kids from good and bad than when they are adults because their brain is still collecting information. Experts conclude rehabilitation works better for juveniles than for adult offenders (Ash). Teens reasoning and judgment are still developing until their mid-twenties (Steinberg). For the most part, teens are incapable of making wise and good choices all the time. Teens are given pressure all the time from school and their peers and it mixes with their immaturity. Teenage is a stage when an individual is developing and learning through exploration. When teens start to listen to their friends more than their family members they tend to find themselves in bad situations. Teenagers want to fit in with their group of friends to have the feeling of being accepted. …show more content…
A crime is a crime no matter who commits it the victim's family suffers. Teens are old enough to be responsible for their actions, they are almost adults. Teens should know by now killing, stealing, and rape is wrong. If teens think they are mature enough to commit adult crimes then they should be treated like one. Teens today are more sophisticated at a younger age. They understand what violence and how to use violent weapons (Reaves). Putting teens in prison will help reduce the crime rate when their peers know they can be punished for their crime. An estimated 200,000 juveniles are tried as adults yearly and receive punitive sentences intended to deter crime and increase public safety (Romanoff). Juveniles who commit several serious crimes should not be given the ability for rehabilitation. They are a bad influence on society. These juveniles could re-offend and your family could be the next victim. You do not want to risk your family or kids. It's absurd to argue teens in today’s society do not understand what killing or stealing really is. If you give these dangerous juveniles a chance to reform how will they learn from their actions? These juveniles need to spend a considerable part of their life thinking about what they

Ten year old boy murders his family. Does he get out when he turns eighteen, because he knows not what he did? Or does he spend the rest of his life in prison? Sometimes teenagers are tried for crimes as adults and face equal penalties that are subject to adults. This is a controversial issue among americans. There are two groups of people. Those who believe that teenagers under the age of eighteen who commit serious crimes should be held responsible as adults for their actions. Courts are said to be too lenient and the young juveniles are evolving into violent youth criminals; And there are those who suggest that teenagers are less likely to understand the consequences of their actions and more likely to become productive citizens if the criminal justice system continues to treat eighteen year olds as juveniles. Juvenile death penalties and life sentences without parole have increased at an estimated rate of three times higher today than fifteen years ago. The youth are still growing to become fully developed, like an adult. There are many cases where tough decisions have to be made and choices must be made by officials. In my opinion all youths at the age of eighteen or younger should be tried as juveniles and all our juvenile courts need to focus more on rehabilitation for the lost of youth to criminal acts. Age should be a factor, not a determinant on how these youths should be tried.…

There are many laws that specifically prohibit teen and adolescent under the age of 18 from doing many things and are there to “protect” us. There is always a punishment when they are broken. The same should apply, if a juvenile is to commit a heinous crime like homicide or first-degree murder, they should be tried and sentenced for the crime. Therefore, I do agree that juveniles should be tried as an adult when they commit the same crimes as that of an adult.…

Juveniles in the adult criminal system are 34% more likely to be rearrested for another crime than youth retained in the juvenile system (Key Facts: Youth in the Justice System) so there for the juveniles aren’t learning their lesson. More and more teens are doing time alongside adults in prison recently after 100s years of adolescents committing serious crimes. “The only effective way to reduce and prevent juvenile crime is to balance tough enforcement measures with targeted, effective and intervention initiatives.” Juveniles are children and children don’t know any better and obviously make mistakes. They don’t expect to be caught after committing a serious crime. Juveniles brains are not fully developed until they are 25, but young people recognize them as adults at the age of 18. About 25,000 children a year have their cases sent to adult courts instead of being tried in juvenile courts, whose convicted defendants are usually set free by the time they turn 21. Trying juveniles as adults is not beneficial for them. But it also is a crime. And crimes are crimes whether…

They are not adults, so they should not be tried as adults. Adolescent brain research shows that children do not have the same mental capacities as adults and the brain is still developing well into their 20s (Ryan). The final part of the brain to mature, the prefrontal cortex, is the part of the brain that works with reasoning and judgment. The changes that happen between 18 and 25 are a continuation of the process that starts around puberty, and 18 year olds are about halfway through that process (Candy). One of the side effects of these changes in the reward system is that adolescents and young adults become much more sensitive to peer pressure than they will be as adults. For instance, a teenager is more likely to do something risky when friends are watching rather than if they were…

For many years, people have believed that the juvenile justice system was meant to serve as a way to protect the community. Juveniles who commit crimes are different from adults because many do not understand the complexity of the crime committed. In order to respond to these differences, many states have established a way to treat these adolescents through juvenile courts and youth-based recovery systems. While most states recognize that juveniles who commit crimes should not be treated as an adult there are still some that are skeptic that the juvenile justice system works.…

There are many teenagers who do violent crimes, but to many people it’s different on how they should be punished. Most people who I spoke to said it all depends upon the crime and then there are some people who think the teenagers’ accused of the violent crime should be sentenced as adults, because they chose to act like adults. While it is wrong to commit a violent crime for a young teenager, I believe that they should not be sentenced as adults, because they have not yet developed full cognitive ability, should have the opportunity to counseling, and they should have a chance at life for a new beginning.…

For the people who said that they should be tried as adults, they believe that juveniles should be held responsible for their actions, that juveniles are not kids that they are young adults, and that by forgiving the juvenile for the crime they did, would just make them think their actions are okay. For the people who think that juveniles should not be tried as adults, they believe that juveniles are physically incapable of thinking like an adult, therefore should not be treated like one. Both sides have valid points in backing up their reasoning’s. I think it is important to look at both sides of the arguments before deciding if you think juveniles should be tried as adults or…

Juveniles are considered juveniles and should be given juvenile punishment unless it's for something inhumane, such as murder. The United States of America has the highest teen murder rate out of every country. The reason is due to guns being easy to get, the amount of violence they see today, and the T.V. programs shown. The 2012 Supreme Court decision to abolish mandatory life in prison for juveniles who commit murder was not a just decision, because teens should know better. They're old enough to know murder is wrong. Our country should give teens the punishment they deserve for the crime they commit. Murder deserves a life sentence whether a juvenile or grown adult.…

Is sending kids to adult prisons and trying them as adults the best solution for our crime problem or would rehabilitating juveniles be a better option? Most people agree that kids who commit violent crimes need to be punished. However, do they really learn anything from being punished as an adult? In today’s society, punishment and rehabilitation has always been a big problem within our views in the Juvenile Justice System. Rehabilitation beats punishment! Adolescents who are tried and convicted of a crime should be placed in a rehabilitative system rather than a punitive system in order to shift behavior as rehabilitative systems lower recidivism rates.…
