Teen Suicide
CHAPTER 2 Causes of Suicide among Teenagers According to the book “Filipino Children under Stress” written by author Maria Lourdes Arellano-Carandang, teenage suicides are often caused by mental problems, substance abuse, family history of suicide, and other stressors such as bullying and financial dilemma. As Dr. Philip Chua from a blog site of Noemi Lardizabal-Dado would say: “People usually attempt suicide to block unbearable emotional pain, which is caused by a wide variety of problems. It is often a cry for help. A person attempting suicide is often so distressed that they are unable to see that they have other options.” Delving in deeper, I would like to elaborate more on these various causes: * SUBSTANCE ABUSE Did you know that the frequency of suicide attempts among substance abusers is five times greater than the frequency among people who do not abuse substances? This is particularly true for alcoholics, because major depression is 50 percent more common among alcoholics than non-alcoholics. Ironically, many people drink alcohol or use drugs such as cocaine to reduce feelings of depression not knowing that these actually lead to greater anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide. In February 7, 2004, a 17-year old young woman named Traci Johnson committed suicide after allegedly taking an antidepressant called Cymbalta for a trial made by a pharmaceutical giant “Eli Lilly & Co.” On an article made by Jeanne Lenzer and Nicholas Pyke for the Independent-UK, it said that:
“For the drugs giant, her death on 7th February last year was an "isolated tragedy" that did not prevent it from pressing ahead with the Cymbalta trials. It is now on sale in the US and - under another name - in Europe and the UK. But for the scientific community it was another warning bell about a class of medicines already under scrutiny for

On the night of February 10, 2007, 13-year-old Kyle Koslop ended his life in his bedroom. He was the 38th person in Luzerne County under the age of 24 to commit suicide since the year of 2000 (Grochowski). Last year, at least three more students from Luzerne County committed suicide; two students from Pittston Area and one student from Nanticoke. Suicide is a serious problem among adolescents because there are many pressures and obstacles adolescents do not know how to cope with. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among 15-24-year-olds (Harpaz) because feelings of being overwhelmed and alone are sometimes unrecognized, and because teenagers can be victims of bullying.…

The biggest unethical behavior that was demonstrated by GSK, and medical journals was the skewing of results of a study. Medical journals published articles that misrepresented the findings of GSK’s research. Internal reports by the company showed that their trials of the drug had failed to benefit adolescents with depression, and positively showed that there were negative results. (Jureidini & McHenry, 2011) The internal report states that “it would be commercially unacceptable to include a statement that efficacy had not been demonstrated, as this would undermine the profile of paroxetine,” and that “to effectively manage the dissemination of data in order to minimize any potential negative commercial impact.” (Jureidini &McHenry, 2011) This indicates that they skewed the results of the study so that only selective data would be published. The authors also place blame on the medical journals that published the results as well, saying that they too are responsible for accurately presenting the results of the company’s research.…

Recent media reports have suggested that medications may provoke suicidal behavior, particularly in adolescents. As a precautionary step, the FDA issued a public health advisory warning doctors to watch patients closely for worsening depression when medication is first prescribed. What does the data show about the effects of medication and suicide? It is possible that suicide risk could increase as a result of medication side effects or as a result of improving depression with continual suicidal symptoms during the first ten to thirty days of treatment.…

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (including suicide attempts and death by suicide) are commonly found at increased rates among individuals with psychiatric disorders, especially major depressive disorder, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, PTSD, anxiety, chemical dependency, and personality disorders (e.g., antisocial and borderline). A history of a suicide attempt is the strongest predictor of future suicide attempts, as well as death by suicide. Intentional self-harm (i.e., intentional self-injury without the expressed intent to die) is also associated with long-term risk for repeated attempts as well as death by suicide.…

Suicide has a huge impact in our society because people are taking their lives for negative reasons. One main reason is because they are abusing drugs and alcohol. Those are some major risk that leads to suicide. The authors state, “It is not surprising that suicide is a leading cause of death among people who abuse drugs and alcohol” (Ross, et al 170). In other words, people are abusing these substances and they are dying because they have no care in the world. But in reality we do not know what these people are feeling or why they decide to take their life. They might be under pressure, stress, or depress. When a…

Suicide by overdose is the third most popular method of suicide in the United States. In 2013, suicide by poisoning accounted for 6,637 deaths, which equated 2.1 deaths per 100,000. The age-adjusted drug poisoning death rate including unintentional, suicides, and undetermined intent increased from 6.2 to 13.8 per 100, 000 from 2000 to 2013 (CDC, 2015). The trends of suicide by overdose are influenced by the physical availability of the substances, the degree of suicide intent, and medication prescription and purchasing patterns. During the early 1900s, household cleaning products and disinfectants were used in suicide by overdose, whereas medications accounted for most suicides by overdose in 2001 to 2007 in England and Whales (Thomas, Beech, & Gunnell, 2013). In reviewing the trends in substances used in suicide using data of attempted suicide between 1985 and 1997 in the United Kingdom, Townsend, Hawton, Harriss, Bale, and Bond (2001) proposed that young adults and individuals who attempted suicide for the first time turn to other readily available drugs such as Paracetamol because they are less likely to have access to prescribed medication. In contrast, psychotropic medications such as antidepressants and tranquilizers were more common in suicide attempt repeaters and older adults. In the United States, White, MacInnes, Hingson, and Pan (2013) reported that the over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen were the most common used drugs for suicidal behaviors in adolescents and young adults. Furthermore, they observed a growing trend toward the use of sedatives, hypnotics, and tranquilizers in young adults due to an increase in access to those substances. When examining suicide data for individuals aged 18 to 95, who committed non-pharmaceutical suicides, Cantrell and Lucas (2014) proposed that inhaled toxins including intentional CO inhalation, ethylene glycol, cyanide, and helium are the most popular methods. This is likely…

I believe the main cause of suicide is the effects of society. We all have our own personal problems and stressful life events that we go through. A stressful life event may range from a break up between a boyfriend and girlfriend/ divorce of husband and wife, a death or loss of a significant loved one, or society not excepting people sexual orientation (gay, lesbians, transgender). All of these factors can take a toll on a person’s emotions. Whatever the problem may be, we must ask ourselves: “if suicide is a choice for us, would it be worth ending my life because of this problem?” People who commit suicide probably figure that whatever the stressful life event they may be experiencing is not worth living through. The people who commit suicide failed to realize that suicide is a permanent solution to what could be a temporary…

The number of adolescent deaths from suicide in the United States increased dramatically during the last few years between the ages of 13 to 24, surpassed only by homicide and accidents. According to data collected by the Center for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) in 2003, 8 percent of adolescents attempted suicide, representing 1 million teenagers, of whom nearly 300,000 receive medical attention for their attempt; and approximately 1,700 teenagers died by suicide each year (Moskos, Achilles, & Gray, 2004).…

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has published a fact sheet of statistics on suicide in the United States. In 2007, it is reported that suicide was the tenth leading cause of death. Furthermore, for every suicide committed, eleven were attempted. A total of 34,598 deaths occurred from suicide with an overall rate of 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. (NIMH, 2010). Risk factors were also noted on this report and listed “depression and other mental disorders, or a substance abuse disorder (often in combination with other mental disorders). More than ninety percent of people who die by suicide have these risk factors (NIMH, 2010).”…
