Teddy Gross's Article 'A Lesson In Caring'
Abuan, Deinnielle Owenn M. The Practice of Charity Teddy Gross wrote an article entitled A Lesson in Caring. The article is about the story of a father and his daughter named Nora. While they were walking along Broadway, Nora, at a very young age, noticed a homeless guy along the street. All of a sudden, Nora asked her father, if they can take the homeless guy with them. However, he did not answer the question of his daughter. A few days later, he saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who are helping elderly people. He immediately told his daughter Nora, who in turn, was very excited upon hearing the news. They went to the place and while they were helping the elderly people, he observed that his daughter was very happy. After taking part in the charitable work, they both went home with tears of joy. In order to understand and appreciate the act of charity, one needs to acknowledge the benefits of giving and receiving. In other words, volunteering enhances the well-being, personality, and at times, the longevity of volunteers. Moreover, volunteering can also reduce drug use and huge declines in dropout rates and teen pregnancies. He also stated that there are five reasons why people volunteer and these are understanding, esteem enhancement, personal development, sense of community and humanitarian values. High school students in our place regularly join different projects that need volunteers such as clean – up drives and outreach programs. The reason is that they find these activities a much better use of their time and each accomplished project gives them an unexplained feeling of satisfaction and success.
