Ted Kooser's 'Abandoned Farmhouse'
What will you leave behind after you’re gone? In the poem “Abandoned Farmhouse” by Ted Kooser, Kooser describes a vacant house, and all the everyday items that were left behind by its previous owner. This poem not only leaves the reader with a sense of mystery, but also develops the idea that the things people leave behind can tell us a lot about a person. Kooser does this throughout his poem using vivid imagery. The author uses imagery to develop the controlling idea when he says “says the Bible with the broken back”. This is imagery because he is vividly describing the Bible, appealing to our senses. This quote proves the theme true because it tells us things about the farmer without ever directly meeting him. We can infer that he

The goal of most stories is to convey a point, or to teach a lesson to the reader. Throughout the short stories “Gwilan's Harp” by Ursula K. LeGuin, “The Washwoman” by Isaac Singer, and “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry, the concept of loss plays a common theme throughout the characters' lives. Loss can be attributed to many things, including people, but in these short stories it is nonhuman things in particular that can serve to teach lessons: the harp in “Gwilan's Harp”, the linens in “The Washwoman” and the vine in “The Last Leaf”. Each of these physical objects takes part in a form of loss that serves to help the characters of each story learn a message, whether it be it large or small.…

Analysis: From the beginning of the chapter a simile can be seen, as the tractors as seem moving “like insects.” It continues with a metaphor of how “they crawled over the ground.” It works well in describing how the tractors were in the huge land, and from far away how they looked like insects. The diction is from a farmland standpoint, having “diesel tractors,” “across the country,” and describing many of the objects with metaphors that exaggerate the details of the “tractors.” Also how they describe the drivers, how they did not seem human. The diction changes, as they describe the driver as a monster, a masked man, a robot. It is interesting because these two chapters are a huge description of the “monster” which is the tractors that run across the land, destroying anything in their path. It talked about how the tractors did not care about the land, and just controlled and destroyed everything, which compares to the bank, which did not care but just took the land from all the people, destroying all life on the country land. Loss is one of the hardest challenges to walk through. Why? It signifies the knowledge of having had something. It was held and cherished and loved, before it was whisked away unexpectedly, out of reach. Nothing can bring it back, and only memories of it’s presence remain. The inevitability does not lessen the pain and emptiness it leaves in it’s wake. In three short stories, “Gwilan’s Harp” by Ursula K. LeGuin, “The Washwoman” by Isaac Singer, and “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry, the theme of loss is illustrated through the loss of a family member, prized possession, and a friend.…

One way that Heaney’s writing portrays a farm-worker is through the description of hard work through the body and its effort. One instance of this is demonstrated when Heaney describes his father and how his “shoulders globed”. This shows powerfully a farm worker because it enables us to get an understanding of how hard they work as well as what they do. “Globed” illustrates the man’s shoulders to have curved from the difficult work in which he has endured. This powerfully portrays a farm-worker because they are renowned for working hard and in this case so much so that his body has in fact deformed into a different shape. Furthermore he describes the globed shoulders to be like a “full sail strung” and as can be imagined a sail bends in the wind into a curve and for someone’s shoulders to be described as this produces the image of years of hard work and determination while working on the farm by the father Another instance of this is shown when Heaney describes the “sweating team” which is the horses who are ploughing the land. This is effective because it portrays how every working person or animal works as hard as they can for the farm. It is powerful because it gives us an insight as to how hard everyone works and the close feel among all beings on the farm.…

In the line 43, he uses allegory to show a clear sentence meaning that he does not want them to suffer¨... and to see you and the dear children want was what I could not bear.¨ Downe uses the word want as lack. They also associate winter with death and portray nature as a harsh mistress. The rhetorical questions in ‘Lore’ are challenges to the reader, and this adds the feel of defiance. The image of “bearded” not only leads us to think of old age and old men but also shows the extent of Jobs immersion in nature. Thomas uses the images of “porridge” and “tea” which are both traditional hearty foods which help to add to the image of the old farmer. Colloquialisms make the character of Job seem more realistic. Also the image of dawn shows that age can be the start of something new and not something that should be looked down…

For example, Dunbar uses imagery when stating, “And a pain still throbs in the old, old scars, And they pulse again with a keener sting--I know why he beats his wing!”(lines 13-15). Here the author is stating that even when scars from past experiences are long over, they are never forgotten, and they can prohibit a person from fighting injustice because of the trauma that itt can bring. The use of imagery in this quote shows the reader just how damaging unjust actions towards a person can be. Dunbar also uses imagery when stating, “I know why the caged bird sings”(line 21). The author expresses in this quote that he understands why the caged bird sings because he has felt caged or trapped for a long time. The author is trying to get the reader to understand that he knows why the bird sings and the reasons for his unrelentless actions for freedom because he himself has felt the exact same way. He wrote about this bird as if he was putting himself into another’s point of view, but in all reality he wrote the bird as…

While reading this poem I had to reread several lines over and over again simply because I liked them so much. A few lines that stood out to me were, “The skeleton of a calf's been wrapped around a pipe”, “A yolk slides down the drain”, and “You drive into the Wyoming part of you where it's obvious there have been some sacrifices” – all of these lines throughout this poem are vivid and give off a sense of loss. A dead baby animal represents something nipped in the bud, a yolk sliding down a drain is a fast and hopeless loss that can’t be recovered (without being messy anyway), and seeing sacrifices on a drive represents the loss of something important during the course of life. All of the images throughout this poem pulled on my heartstrings and were pieced together into a relatable format with pictures of food, animals, and rustic imagery, i.e. a plastic jug of milk, an egg yolk, flamingos, white dogs, horses, Wyoming, missile silos, tornados, bottoms of lakes, etc. And my favorite part of this poem that really caught me off guard, sealed the deal, and made me want to write this response, was the way the poem ended. The lines, “Everyone who ever knew you gently roams the town at the bottom of a lake - They flash to the surface,…

However, one of these days it, too, will give way and it will no longer be home to those who hold it in their fondest memories. But, of course, an empty house is no longer a home. It’s just the place or the house where home used to be. What remains are the lives of those who were touched by those dear ones who lived there.…

“, this piece of evidence shows theme by using imagery. It shows imagery by giving us an image of the scene and It shows theme by letting us know the relationship between the father and the son. According to the evidence given the father and son have a normal relationship because parents usually sit their child in their lap to either tell them a story or sing to them. The father is probably about to tell his son a story. In other words the theme is that parents always have time for their child. In “A Story “ the poet also used imagery by saying “The man rubs his chin, Scratches his ear”, this piece of evidence shows theme by using imagery. It shows imagery because it gives us an image of the father’s action and it shows the relationship between him and his son. The evidence “The man rubs his chin” also shows imagery to show the theme. The relationship between the boy and the father makes the man rub his chin, usually when someone rubs their chin, they are making a decision. In this case the father is making a decision about the story he will tell his son, this shows theme because it lets us know that sometime you have to think about the things before you say…

Another important allusion can be seen when in the same part of the story as the previous one. Now, he is talking about how the farm is his and how he worked so hard to make it what it is. He then gives an allusion to the story of Peter building his church on the rock in the Bible. He says "God's hard, not easy! God's in the stones! Build my church on a rock – out o' stones an' I'll be in them! That's what he meant t' Peter." This quote refers to Peter's story in the Bible. Peter first built his church on the sand but then the water came and washed it away so he then rebuilt it on the rock to keep the water from getting to it. Building it on the rock was a much harder job so the moral of the story is that you have to work hard for what you want. This story fits what Cabot is saying well because he is talking about how hard he had work to build his house. He had to remove all of the stones from the ground and then use them to build his house. The point of this quote is to show that Cabot is a hard worker.…
