Ted Kaczynski's Five Perspectives To Understand Behavior?
Everyday violence occurs, but what exactly causes people to have a violent outburst. Psychologists have developed five perspectives to help understand behavior; Neuroscience, behavioral, psychodynamic, cognitive and humanistic. I believe neuroscience is the best option to understand why people do violent actions. I choose the neuroscience perspective because it focuses on the facts and can be proven through a series of tests. Neuroscience is the study of the nervous systems. It includes the operation of the human brain, spinal cord and other biological functions. Some examples are chemical imbalance and brain circuitry. Kaczynski would put bombs in packages, airlines and universities. Ted’s nickname was the Unabomber. He was highly educated because he hand crafted all of his bombs. The attacks with bombs lasted about 14 years; he killed three and wounded twenty three individuals. The FBI had troubling finding a lead because Ted planned all of the attacks in countless detail. Eventually a woman saw him put a package in the mail and now they did have an idea of what he looked like. On September 19th Ted publishes his writing the Manifesto. Ted’s brother, David Kaczynski saw his writing and recognized that it was Ted, he then told the FBI. On April 3rd Ted was arrested, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. When the FBI was searching through his house they found a journal with all the attacks in excessive detail and why he did it. His attacks were for revenge on people he hated. Psychologist who examined Ted diagnosed him with untreated schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a neurobiological disorder of the brain. This relates to neuroscience because his brain wasn’t functioning right and that’s why he was violent. When he was younger, he was adopted and he had an adopted sister. He wasn't the typical kid because he didn't fit it with his classmates. Sometimes he got teased in school, but he never defended himself. He was uncoordinated and had dyslexia. When he got older his adopted dad committed suicide because he had cancer and he started killing two months later. The killing happened in 1989-1993. He was thirty years old when his first victim died. All of his victims were prostitutes, so they had that in common. He tried to make himself stop the killing by visited the women in the daytime instead of night. Rifkin didn't understand why he murdered these women; he said “it was a mystery to him.” Once he was arrested, some psychologists asked him if he wanted to do some tests to see why he murdered the women, he agreed. The psychologist saw that Rifkin couldn’t perform simple tasks. For example, one of the tests involved him to make his hands lie flat on his knees, then moving his hand into a fist and finally making his hands lay on their side. During the test he got the orders all mixed up and was making simple mistakes, an average human would make one or two mistakes. After all the tests were done, the psychologist concluded that he had a dysfunctional frontal lobe. The frontal lobe helps humans stop impulse and violence.
