28 April 2014 Technology Addiction: The Facts
In the last twenty years technology has advanced ever-so quickly. Like with every good thing there are some drawbacks. One of those drawbacks is addiction, technological addiction. You may think this is not serious but is a growing problem in the world let alone America. This is also the basis of the novel “Feed” by M. T. Anderson. In the novel people have installed micro-chips in their heads, all the people do is look up things on the “Feed”. When stripped away from the “Feed” the main characters show signs of addiction or obsession. In the article I will be highlighting symptoms of technology addiction, the risks of technology addiction, its similarity to drug addiction, and why technology is so appealing. Technology addiction is just as bad as drug and alcohol addiction. There are many symptoms that are shown by people with addiction to technology. One symptom is a compulsion to use your smart phone or any other form of technology during exciting and/or rare life events such as parties and vacations. If you feel like you need to pull out your phone when being lectured at is also an indication. Another sign of addiction is loss of time, if a few minutes of surfing the web turn into a few hours or if you get mad or irritated when you’re using your device and are interrupted then you might be showing signs you are addicted. Also thinking of what you last did when you used the internet or other technology and planning what you will do when you use it next time can be added to the list. Mood swings like sudden depression, attitude changes, and loss of self-esteem can be added to the list. In addition hiding or lying about your internet use or feeling guilty when you use your smartphone are symptoms. If you experience any of the symptoms listed then you might have a problem.
Technology obsession, just like any other addiction, is harmful to your health. Now some physical

Addiction is defined as frequent and obsessive behavior, despite negative consequences from dependency. Feeling anxious or upset when leaving a cell phone at home, or experiencing anxiety when not having a wireless connection are symptoms of withdrawal from a technological addiction. People who suffer from addiction are often in a state of denial, and use substances or objects to preoccupy themselves, in order to avoid feelings of depression and anxiety. Excessive use of the Internet, cellphones and other technologies can cause people to become more impatient, impulsive, forgetful and even more narcissistic. Spending an ample amount of time with devices, has suggested that excessive dependence on cellphones and the Internet is akin to an addiction. Technology, like food, is an essential part of daily life; in that suffering from an obsessive virtual addiction cannot be given up entirely and instead must be taken into moderation and controlled use.…

First consider how addictive technology has become. According to Sherry Turkle from TED Talk, her daughter spent time with her friends together looking at their mobile phones devices (Ted.com). These kids had so much fun on their mobile phones that they didn’t even look at their friends. On the other hand, technology became an essential part of our lives right now. Most of us spend time with our electronic devices that we forget where we were standing, what we were doing, or what is the purpose and objective of our life. What makes us addicted to mobile phones? Nowadays, we can do almost everything with our cellphones, such as playing videos games, accessing social networks, and watching videos online. These things have become too addictive to us, and we have spent so much time on such devices. Look back to 20 years ago, back when the time technologies were not very common compared to today. Eventually, we spent more time with each other; we hung out with friends. Technologies are advancing so rapidly that we have become addicted and have forgotten what surrounds us.…

But what of the academic or career prospects of those who do not want to interact with this technology? Before taking this English 305 class, I tried to avoid computers as much as possible. I didnt have any interest in cyberspace such as chatting, email, and gender swapping. Through this class, I had a chance to contact others through cyberspace. However, I still have a fear of computers. I decided that I want to know more about computers and cyberspace. I will first discuss cyberspace, then I will discuss about technophobia.…

“Scientists say juggling e-mail, phone calls and other incoming information can change how people think and behave.” (Attached to Technology and Paying a Price) They also say that peoples’ ability to focus is being weakened by bursts of information coming from technology and the internet. These bursts cause a primitive impulse to respond to the immediate interruptions. The impulses causes a stimulation of excitement that researchers say can be addictive. One giant network combined with smaller networks; that is what we call the internet. The internet hasn’t been around for a long time but billions of people are on it throughout the day. Why are so many people on the web? My answer to this would be because businesses all around the world use it for communicating and accessing information from their own company or others. People use the internet to access information, communicate through e-mails, read about the news worldwide, and gaming. The internet could be used for so many different things, and this is why so many people are on it so much.…

With the rapid growth of technology, there has been a debate on how we are using technology in our life. Many people think that we are now abusing modern devices to support for our own life; while others reckon that using technology brings us just good things and make our life easier. According to what I have observed and experienced, I believe that people, nowadays, have been overly dependent on technology. To begin with, it is not hard to recognize the intergral role of technology in houses. Housewives, nowadays, are no longer “housewives” as itself used to mean. They do almost every task with the assistance of modern machines. They have clothes washed by washing machine instead of doing that by hand as before or they clean dishes just by putting them into a dishwasher. In the past, televisions seemed like the luxurious thing but each family now has at least one or even more than two TV sets in their house. It is now common to catch the image of many children or some adults spending most of their time in front of the screens containing various attractive things. What is more, workplaces are becoming more and more dependent upon technology. In almost every company, there is an advancedly computerized system which makes tasks much easier and quicker. Most of employees have their own mobile phone or computer so that they could exchange information or documents as soon as they want without leaving their desks. Besides, there are many kinds of machine such as printers, photocopiers .etc that make working as easy as walking. In addition, in term of education, students are now also using too much modern devices for their studying. They do calculations even the most simple using portable calculators. They also take advantage of the Internet to do assignments without many efforts. On the other hand, many people think that people’ abuse of technology just brings good points. It makes our world easier to live as it helps people do all tasks effectively. However, that is not…
