One of the major challenges that independent India faced was how a traditional sector like agriculture could be modernized particularly amongst a group of people who were illiterate or semi-literate tradition bound and economically backward. The need for modernization through innovation was imperative. It was this which prompted the government to initiate a number of measures intended to accomplish this.

SOIL PRODUCTIVITY

Soil being the most important resource in agriculture no productivity could be achieved without enriching it. It was therefore necessary to identify the different types of soil and classify land resources accordingly. The country was divided into 186 resource areas and a soil atlas was contemplated. It was also decided to build up an inventory of difference soils across the country covering also micro nutrients which would be helpful in the scientific management of land. The resulted spinoff of this was that large areas of saline/alkaline soils were reclaimed.

GENETIC ARCHITECTURE

Advances in genetics helped in restructuring the genetic architecture of plants which resulted in the development of hybrid maize, cotton and dwarf wheat. These breakthroughs were made possible due to innovations in related areas like plant protection, breeding of resistant varieties and chemical control.

MUTATION TECHNOLOGY

Agriculture in India being a non mechanized sector which depended on animal husbandry made it imperative to initiate research in cattle breeding. Research was conducted for selective development of indigenous breeds and cross breeding which

    Genetic engineering is aimed to produce new substances or improve traits and functions of existing organisms by a set of technologies, which involves various direct interventions in genetic processes such as modifications, manipulations, and recombination of genes or the DNA. Methods of genetic modifications allow scientists to alter the structure and organization of genetic material faster and more deliberately than traditional methods of breeding and selection. “Agricultural applications of the technology have involved the insertion of genes for desirable agronomic traits (e.g. herbicide tolerance, insect resistance) into a variety of crop plants, and from a variety of biological sources” (Nestmann, Copeland & Hlywka, 2002, p. 1).     According to Chelsea Powell, a PhD student at Harvard University, believes that the key step of genetic modification are identifying a trait of interest, isolating that trait, inserting that trait into the desired organism and finally insuring that the organism grows. I agree with her on this. To modify the organism for the purpose that you are wanting you need one thing to add not a mixture of things to see what works. Once you find the gene that you need you have to extract it. Adding it into the right spot to get your desired trait. The amount of science that is put into genetic modification is unfathomable.     As with traditional plant breeding, genetic engineering seeks to develop plants that feature certain desirable traits. These could include developing plants that feature "input" traits such as resistance to pests or resistance to fungus and disease or plants that can withstand frost or drought conditions.     The term GM foods or GMOs (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecu- lar biology techniques. These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance de- sired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. The enhancement of desired traits has traditionally been undertaken through breeding, but conventional plant breeding methods can be very time consuming and are often not very accurate.
