Technological Determinism
What is technological determinism? If you were to ask an average person on the street this question all you would get back is a blank stare. However it is an important question and plays a big role in our world today. Technological determinism like the human mind can be hard to understand at times. But in this paper you will see that once it is broken down into its various parts the bigger picture will begin to take shape. Now with that said it also important to mention that like other issues in this world this one deserves the utmost attention. So I will also be discussing the point of views from five theoreticians who have various opinions about technological determinism. And lastly I think it is important to see how identity theft in America is in accordance with to technological determinism.
The first thing we need to understand about technological determinism is that it is a theory. The technological determinism theory is basically a way of explaining how technology has important effects on people’s lives. This theory also attempts to explain our history by stating the effects technology has had on society and people over time. When we take a deeper look into the different types of determinism we will really begin to see just how broad they are and what exactly they cover.
One of the first elements of technological determinism is reductionism. This particular portion of this theory acts as the mathematician in a way. It breaks down the reasons why something works or doesn’t work. So take for example a really complicated math problem if you see the finished result without a reason to how it was done will not make sense to you. But being shown the each part of the problem would simplify it therefore making it easier for you to understand.
The second piece of technological determinism is reification which basically means that an object for example is being treated differently than it should be. And we see that with the way people use the word technology or

McShane’s argument against the theory of technological determinism was strongly displayed within each chapter of the book. He constructed his argument using different factors. Within each reason he was able to clearly demonstrate the idea that “it’s not just technology effecting culture, but also culture effects technology.” In one of his arguments he constructed, he stated “the present epidemic has brought us face to face with the startling fact that the sudden loss of horse labor would totally disorganize industry.” With this example he made it clear that society wouldn’t allow the disappearance of horses, which is also the manipulation of technology. He made many arguments like this demonstrating exactly how different major aspects in society affected the growth of technology.…

The notion of rational thought is a very strong reason technology has become so influential in the world today. The "opening" of the mind influenced all ways of life and society. Major ideas blossomed like politics, governing laws, literature, art, history, and new inventions. Scientific thinking was groundbreaking. Ideas of mathematics, astronomy, architecture, and anatomy engrossed the public. The revolution of rational thought dominated society and began a transition because people began using reason to explain human and natural events, rather than the gods. Many Philosophers with their rational thought put things in motion for people to begin to question what influenced their lives in the time of Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Rational thinking gave birth to new inventors to include Hero or Heron of Alexandria. It also made its impact on the way inventions would work throughout history into modern times. Three major contributors to the theory of rational thought were Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. With their search for more knowledge came newer teaching for others, which began a new revolution of education. People were questioning the major factors that ran their lives. The rights people were questioning were their choice of religion, their social standing, and their government and laws. Within these times new governments and laws were formed along with new theories of art and new technological advances. Scientific thinking was groundbreaking among Greek minds. Ideas of mathematics, astronomy, architecture, and anatomy engrossed the public. During times like the industrial revolution technology came into play through rational thought. People began to think of ways to better themselves and took on the theory to better their work. People began to question the meanings of life and began using their minds to expand the world. Even today, rational thought is used by all of us and continues to influence society.…

In this essay I will argue that technology does not ensure progress. The first main concept that needs to be clarified is 'technology'. This paper acknowledges the concept 'technology' as being the application of science, especially to industrial or commercial objectives. The other key concept 'progress' in this essay is defined as a steady improvement, as a society or civilization. I am arguing that the concept of technology does not ensure the concept of progress because there are certain technologies that have hurt society in various ways. Furthermore, not all technologies ensure progress.…

Technologies can be considered as structural constraints. Similar to all structures human beings have created, they can limit or enable human actions. Technology can be defined as the creation, adaptation, usage and comprehension of mostly machines which are known to make life better and assist in solving a problem (Wright, 2008). In addition to that, technology is also used to perform a specific function. The use of technology by human beings can be dated back when they began creating simple tools from natural resources. From using fire to prepare their food which led to the increase of food production to the use of the wheel which aided in moving from one place to another and environmental controlling, human beings are known to use technology to their advantage. Recent technology for instance the internet, the printing press and the mobile phone have made communication easier. It has enabled human beings to be able to communicate and interact freely within the global boundaries (Wright, 2008).…

Hughes presents a case for talking about technological momentum as a point between two opposite ideas; social constructivism and technological determinism. This raises questions as to what exactly the relationship is between technological momentum and soft determinism. Both ideas deal with the effect society has on technology and the effect that technology has on society. I will argue that while both ideas seem to be the same, there are important distinctions to make between the two. One is that Hughes’s idea of technological momentum is time dependent. So it is sensitive to society, culture, and the changes that occur to a technological system as it matures. On the other hand, soft determinism doesn’t distinguish between when a system will tend to be affected most by society, and when that technological system will have the most influence on society. In his essay, Thomas Hughes presents a case for technological momentum. The idea of technological momentum lies between the extremes of social constructivism and technological determinism. Social constructivism is when social or cultural forces determine technological change. Technological determinism, on the other hand, is the idea that technical forces determine social and cultural changes (Smith, 102). Within his essay Hughes points out how technological systems evolve during their lifetime to fall under either of these extremes. According to Hughes, the maturity of the system often times dictates its influence on society and the impression the society itself can have on the technological system. One might point out that the idea of technological momentum is similar to the idea of soft determinism. The soft view of determinism is the belief that technological changes drives social change, but social pressures also influence it. Both of the ideas use the view that technology effects society, and that society effects technology. The ideas of technological momentum and soft determinism are very similar in the ways…

Before my first year in college started, Mama and I went to the mall to buy school-related things, including notebooks, pens, and a bag. When we arrived at the shoes-section, I found myself stuck in deciding which pair I should choose. Well, it's not because I don't like any—actually, I've found what kind of pair I want, but my mother kept on insisting another pair. It ended up that I bought what she liked for me because the pair that I liked didn't have a size appropriate for my feet. From this situation, I wondered if I had any sense of freedom at all.…

Many people live their lives effortlessly making decisions everyday, major and minor, and not thinking about the effect their decisions have, or even why they make some of their decisions. Do our decisions really matter or make a difference? In the deterministic way of thought, no, the decisions one makes on a day to day basis are actually not decided in the present. Events that have happened in the past determine the outcome of every situation in the present. This way of thinking presents itself in deterministic literature, but also in everyday life for some people. To acquire insight into this way of thinking, one must look at the origins and types of determinism, its appearance in literature, relevance today and the controversy and…

Those who identify themselves as technological determinists believe we as humans have remarkably little control over technology and the effect it has on the world. Just two months ago, I passionately denied this point of view and identified myself as a social constructivist. Perhaps it is the idea of not being in complete control of my decisions that I did not want to accept. However, after completing the challenge of going twelve hours without technology, I quickly learned that my thoughts on technological determinism were not in line with my experiences. The fact is technology has become an integral part of day-to-day life. Truly understanding the effects and dare I say, control, that technology has on life, twelve hours without it will certainly enlighten each one of us. In the following pages, I will attempt to describe the challenges of my day without technology. Furthermore, I will attempt to interpret how my experiences relate to my relationship with technology and society. Ultimately, my purpose is to identify events which support or defy the view of technological determinism and understand the driving factors behind them.…

It means to say that the universe and everything in it is determined that every event including human actions has a cause and that everything in the universe is absolutely determined and ruled by immutable laws. Determinism is the belief that all acts, including human actions are caused by past events are predetermined. If determinism is true, we have no free will, so that nobody may be held morally or judicially responsible for his or her thoughts and actions; no one is going to be praised or blamed for his or her actions since she or he has no control over them.…

Everything likes to believe that their actions are their own. We make decisions everyday that shape our life and lives around us. This idea of conscious decision making is known as free will. When free will is taken away, control is lost from our lives and what were once choices are now predetermined paths. The deterministic view shows that nothing is random, as the events of life are already set in stone. That is, every action, thought, event, and even disasters were always going to happen.…

“The essence of technology lies in enframing. Its holding sway belongs within destining” (Heidegger 260). In this quote Heidegger explains the significance of the two terms Enframing and destining and their part of the danger. The definition of destining is; destining is the path we shoes that would lead us to a certain destiny. What does destining has to do with the danger? Well the destining humans chose is enframing. Heidegger uses the term enframing to describe/explain part of the danger. Enframing basically means the frame or the lens we use to look at the world. The danger is that all we see through that lens is standing-reserve, not only that, but also the fact that enframing is the only lens/frame we use to see the world through, as he mentioned in the following quote “Placed between these possibilities, men are endangered by destining. The destining of revealing is as such, in every one of its modes, and there for necessarily, danger” (Heidegger 260). Standing-reserve is another term that he uses to explain the danger. Standing-reserve basically means, when you see a mountain you would give it essence of energy, basically you would see it as its technological potential, and not as what it is. And that’s what he explains in the following quote “the essential unfolding of technology threatens revealing, threatens it with the possibility that revealing will be consumed in ordering and that everything will present itself only in the concealment of standing- reserve” (Heidegger 263)…
