ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Professor David Bergin for providing me with support and guidance throughout my research. Through my experiences working with him I learned a great deal about the research process and how to structure my writing and feel better prepared to move forward with research in the future. I would also like to thank my thesis committee members who provided me with a lot of feedback on how to improve my research topic and gave me ideas to build on in future research studies. A great amount of thanks goes to the schools sampled in this study. The director of the Area Career Center was very welcoming and open to my research topic allowing me to gain as much exposure to career and technical education and their students as I wanted. Without the ACC’s interest in my study this research would not have been possible. I also want to thank the local high school that allowed me access to a few students even though they had very demanding schedules. Gaining insight from Advanced Placement students creating an interesting element to my study that I have found very valuable. Finally, I thank the University of Missouri-Columbia’s campus IRB who approved my research study

Times have changed from the mid-1900s. Career life is more difficult to settle into if one does not present with an education. Life as we know it is getting harder, “This generation is difficult but future generations will have an endless line of competition… this will only get more and more competitive as the years pass on(careerbuilder.com).” In this quote, it is brought to the readers’ attention that future generations will have it harder than previous generations. Remembering Gwen Noah, she too explained that her degree did not mean much to the employers she was hired by, but just one generation later, which her daughter where brought into, it was completely different. Noah encourages young people in today’s’ society to get a college education to pursue their long term goals. The Los Angeles Times throws the truth with a bang, and instead of covering it subtly, they have it out there for everyone to recognize the truth. The truth is, education is valued much more than it used to be valued years ago; it will continue to rise in value as long as the demands are met and people raise the…

In 2014 there are still striking gender disparities in fields such as, guidance and counseling practices, career technical education programs, in the level and quality of classes available in traditionally male and female career technical education programs, and in the wages earned by female and male career technical education graduates. An interesting comparison of two surveys, one in Montana in 1980 and another in Virginia in 1995, illustrates a large, enduring gender gap in a critical career technical education program area. In Montana in 1980, females accounted for half of enrollment in only one high school technical education course. Female enrollment was less than 10 percent in all other high…

The career choice as the authors stated “the choices a student makes about his or her field of study and later career can have a larger impact on what they get out of the career”. (Page 214, Para 14) The effectiveness the authors have on readers is very effective to help readers understand the concept of picking a valued career choice. The statistics the author includes is a work life earnings and includes the highest paid major is engineering and math. This was very difficult to understand because education was last on the pay scale earning the lowest. Education is a major field of study and it reminds readers that the degree chosen sometimes doesn’t meet the equal pay deserved. The effective logical appeal the authors used was “fourteen percent of people with a high school diploma make at least as much as those with a bachelor’s degree, and seventeen percent of people with a bachelor’s degree make more than those with a professional…

“In California, 260,000 college graduates under the age of 30 are working in low paying jobs...gone to high school graduates and dropouts such as food services, retail sales, and clerical work.” Larry Cuban, a former high school teacher and 20 years as a professor at Stanford University, was partially persuasive on the idea that “everyone” shouldn’t go to college. High schools now have integrated pathways in technology and medical programs, which prepare students for middle-class jobs, by experience in early programs in high school. James Kemple, the Executive Director of the Research Alliance for NYC schools, ”.. Found that those students in career academies..who completed these programs earned more money than those who were in non-academy programs.” Cuban makes a point, academic programs are efficient because programs in Career and Technical Education (CTE) help students gain experience and prepare students for jobs that are rising in the career world. CTE programs help students from poor backgrounds and young adults to achieve skills needed in…

Peering into an 8:00 am class full of freshman college students, many observations can be made. There are students with their heads down, (obviously still listening to the professor) students with their pencils racing, students with their minds wondering, and students with their attention to the teacher. As one might note, not all students have their mind focused on what they paid for. Some people go through college as a party or just because it’s become one of societies “norms”; others have a set goal in mind. However, if used to its best ability, college allows one to gain an advantage over high school diploma holders, by attaining the knowledge, skillsets, and tools to achieve or explore their career goals.…

By providing a multitude of skills to students, Career and Technical Education programs prepare them for careers and college readiness. The reason why these programs have higher success outcomes than online schooling and AP classes, is because the coursework is meant to have the same academic standards as high schools while also providing the necessary skill set and knowledge for a student’s career path. Fortunately, CTE programs allow students to use applied, contextual learning to help see the relevance of what they are learning and its connection to career opportunities and life goals. What makes Career and Technical Education programs helpful in college and the workforce, is that students focus on the academic and technical knowledge of performing a job task. However, many parents feel skeptical about sending their kids to a CTE program because they believe that these programs are a , “...low-level vocational education track that often leads to a low-skill job” (Brand et al. 8). In the past, CTE programs were meant to provide low-performing students with the chance to find a career for them. Because of these low-performing students, Career and Technical Education programs do not have the best…

The goals of the Choices into Action Guidance and Career Education Program Policy are threefold: that students develop a good understanding of lifelong learning, relationships and career planning; that they develop learning and social skills, social responsibility and career goals and finally, that they can apply this learning in their lives and at work both within the school and the community. Student development, interpersonal development and career development are three goals that, according to this policy, should relate directly to a school’s guidance and career education program. Students will be able to make connections between what they are learning in the classroom to what they are experiencing in the community which will allow them to better prepare for and adapt to the eventual transitions they will make throughout their lives. This program will enable students to learn self-discipline, personal and social responsibility and respect for others, all of which are important characteristics of a well-balanced, self-sufficient and job-ready successful young adult.…
