Team Reflection Paper
Kairos Blog

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in Kairos XI through Fairfield’s Campus Ministry. The experience proved to be very interesting, packed with all different sorts of emotions. For me, the retreat was initially a bit awkward because I was one of the only seniors and I did not know many of the other students. However, I soon overcame this issue and by the end of the trip I had made many new friends. The retreat has been planned out since December, which shows how much time the team leaders put into making the Kairos experience truly meaningful for all of its participants. The weekend getaway was just what I needed to take some time and reflect about my life and what direction I wanted to head in. It also helped me to realize that God has not had much presence in my life lately, a problem I need to resolve.

Many of the students had shared that they had planned on going during other times of their life, but the timing was always an issue. This past weekend, was a time where finally I did not have a prior commitment preventing me from experiencing Kairos, plus it was my last opportunity as a student to attend. Our group was very fortunate to have special guests on the retreat, mainly Father Van Arx and Tom Pellegrino. Imagine having the two most important figures at Fairfield on the same retreat. Tom Pellegrino helped and shared some stories from his past while Father Van Arx celebrated a mass and administered confessions. Both men are truly insightful and are directly correlated with the great experience I have had during my 4-year stay at

The Tiber Muse, originally discovered in the vicinity of the Tiber River in Rome in 1885, is a product of the Graeco-Roman era and is dated around the 2nd-1st century BCE. This date and other formal qualities of the sculpture such as the pose, drapery and medium suggest that it was produced during the Hellenistic Period of Greece and Asia Minor, and then imported to Rome at a later date. The importation, copying, and public display of Greek art were common from the start of Roman conquering of Greek territories and throughout the Roman Imperial era. The formal qualities of this piece, to be explored later in this exhibition, are comparable to those of the Nike of Samothrace in that they both exhibit the dramatic, elaborate techniques common of the Hellenistic Period (323-30 BCE) that embrace a range of emotions, providing us with an overpowering, multi-sensory experience as we view these pieces. The qualities and purpose of art during the Hellenistic Period were quite different from those of the Byzantine Era, to be further explored by comparing these two sculptures with the Justinian and Attendants mosaic from San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy. Through a formal analysis of these three works, the meaning, purpose and values of the culture that produced them will become clear, and we can further understand the historical context of these two very different time periods.…

During the meeting there was a break where everyone stood up and got coffee and broke into a small conversation groups. The was where I did most of my observing and began to realize even more these people are people just like me, the only difference between them and I was that their reactions to situations were different than mine. Stories were told of going to birthday parties, dinner and even work situations. These stories were no different than my everyday life, the only difference was that after the situations I like to come home and talk to my children and husband they like to have a drink to relax. As the meeting came to an end another pledge was being spoke and everyone stood up and held hands in a circle for the pledge. Learning about a culture this way gives the lessons more integrity and makes them more real for the participants than being taught the lessons out of context (Juleen and Trevor Buser 167). The Busers describe throughout their article how “cultural immersion experiences [are] unique in that they provide a venue for interpersonal learning” (167). There is a special kind of knowledge that comes from participating in and experiencing something new and unexpected. By attending mass or meeting and conversing with people in St Stephens, we were able to not only present an interesting new perspective of practicing the Catholic faith, but also develop on a deeper, personal…

Next I would devise a plan of action to lead the team in a particular direction based on objectives established by superiors. Policies would be established or enforced to help the group stay on target. Continually plan ahead focusing on all possible scenarios, aspects, and possible crises to help be prepared and revise and adjust plans as necessary. The revision of my plans would enable me to enact a change of action, by selecting alternative solutions to the problems as they arise.…

Prelude: Originally I had my TA, Amy Picknell sign me up for the KTC visit on Sunday September 16th. However, I unfortunately had to go to an unexpected funeral on that Saturday and Sunday so I wasn’t able to go to the KTC meditation. I ended up leaving Columbus Friday night and on my way down I kept looking and looking for places to visit and couldn’t find anything. Then, out of nowhere I noticed some of the places listed on carmen and one of the places was a Buddhist temple in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The funeral was in Dayton and Yellow Springs was no more than 35 minutes away. So me being the angelic student I am, got up on Saturday at 6:00AM…

The day we had the recollection was really a perfect day for us to unwind, relax, get stressed free, detoxify our mind and feel God’s presence. It was only a week after the midterm examination. Recollection was like a cleansing bathe on every soul. Sacred Heart at Catalunan Grande, Davao City was the perfect place for this kind of recreation because of its breath taking scenery of the nature. Also, all of us had a great time to enjoy the recollection. I’ve learned so many things in the one day of staying. I’ve learned a lot in the recollection and it reflects the way I am communicating to God. We really appreciate our mentor in our recollection. We get to get to know more about ourselves and every time we had this kind of event, there are revelations about myself that I really didn’t know about. And, it’s a good thing to know. And most importantly, we get to talk to God, to adore Him, praise Him, worship Him and get connected to Him. It’s a very nice feeling to express yourself to others who are in turn open to you. It was so heart whelming experience. We learned about the real meaning of love, care, prayer, and Silence, forgiveness and learn to turn to God to have faith in Him. I have classmates who have a fight and forgave each other through that day. In short, we became relaxed and had fun.…
