Teaching Assistant Diploma Course Level 3
Assignment One

1. Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments.

Before the lesson begins I would ascertain from the teacher which particular role they wished me to undertake. I would then prepare the instruments ready for use. I would need to check that the instruments were in good working order and safe for use. I would also familiarise myself with the instruments, making sure I knew what they were called, how to play them and any other appropriate facts so that I could answer any of the pupils questions. I would then obtain any additional items, such as, music sheets or handouts, making sure there are enough for both staff and pupils. I would then ensure that the area to be used for the music lesson was of sufficient space and clean and tidy. The instruments would be set out ready for the pupils to ensure smooth running of the lesson.
During the lesson, I would supervise the pupils, helping to demonstrate the correct use of the instrument, promoting safety and encouraging them to listen to what the teacher is saying. I would also support pupils who are experiencing any difficulties and give them plenty of praise and positive encouragement. I would observe and monitor the pupils behaviour, ability and understanding during the lesson.
At the end of the lesson I would check to see if the instruments were still in good condition and store them away in the correct place. Also I would report any findings of my observations to the teacher, such as, if a particular pupil was not responding well, struggling or showing negative behaviour, or equally if a child was helpful, showed enthusiasm or promising talent.

2. What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for this percussion lesson ?

I would prepare the classroom ensuring it was fully set-up to allow the lesson to

Our last observation this semester was with Rachel Pollard at Hartwood Elementary School. This school includes grades K-5. Mrs. Pollard is in a very unique situation, because she sees each of her classes for forty minutes twice a week. Since she has twice as much time with her students as compared to most other music teachers, her students are able to advance quickly with their musical skills. This benefit was very obvious through my observations. Mrs. Pollard’s lessons were well thought-out and she had clear objectives in mind for each activity. Everything she did served a purpose, including singing a song to move the students into a new seating arrangement and her “point checks” at the beginning of class.…

As a teacher/trainer it is your role to plan and carry out clear learning sessions with material that is relevant to the subject. You will need to have the correct resources for each session and to determine the length and content of the sessions in relation to the length of the course. Once this has been planned you will need to decide the best way to implement your teaching by identifying the needs of your learners, your organisation and your own. Sessions may need to be adapted for learners depending on their individual preferred learning styles, motivations, previous educational experiences and any special needs a learner may have. You may need to arrange for initial assessments to be carried out in order to gain an understanding of a learners skills and knowledge along with interviewing learners to gain an insight to any possible barriers or challenges that may affect their learning, and if so come to an agreement with regards a specific learning plan for them. If a learner has any…
