Teacher Observation
COMM 2270
Teacher Observation I observed a 1st grade at the Alamosa Elementary School. The classsroom environment was the appropiate for this grade because they had a lot of pictures and illustrations that thy will use during the school year for example the multiplications, the seasons, the alphabet, the colors, and the different books that the teacher will read for them in a future. Also another thing that I though that was really good for the students each of them had their own desk and on top of it they have a little alphabet and the some color names, this will made a little bit easier for the students when they were writing of identifying a letter. Another good thing that I observed was that the teacher had a list of the different activities that they will have during the day, I though that this will be a good way to let the students that they will be doing that day. A very good idea that probably all the elementaries or only the first grades do is that the teacher has a special chair where they seat to read to the students , while the students are seatting on the floor listening the lecture. Another good thing that they had was that each student had their own box label with their name where they had their colors, scissors, pencils or any work that the teacher will have to check for that day. Some of the subjects that the teach taugh during my observation were the alphabet, the sounds of the letters, the difference between the vowels and consonants and the seasons, techer was doing a review for all those students who had a hard a time during kinder garden and answering all the questions that the students had or missunderstandings. One unusual circumstance that I observed was that one student after their break got lost, everybody got in a line to go back to the classroom and probably we wasn’t listening or he was somewhere else (bathroom, cafeteria, etc) , he was still in the play ground and another teacher had to take him to his corresponding classroom. His teacher was surprise and at the same time in shock because her mistake was not checking if all of her students were on line. I think is one the most important things that a teacher needs to do before anything, double check if all the students are in line and ready to go back because why if the students go outside of the campus. The four concepts that I observed were: the Communication Climate, Cultural Diversity, Immediancy and Response Styles. One of the most important concepts that I observed from this teacher was the Response Style “ is how the techer respond to students will stifle or enhance the discussion process” (Cooper & Simonds, 2007, p.141). One of example of this was when the teacher was asking questions about the story for that day, she was responding nicely to the students but at the same time she wasn’t giving the chance to the students who were quiet to answer some of the questions and probably they were quiet because they were afraid of not know the right answer. Another example was when students and the teacher were having a conversation about their lecture and the same students were answering the question over and over and but wount’t let the rest of the class to participe because they will make fun of the student who answered wrong or they will correct them right away without letting the teacher to answer and making the rest of the students to feel bad and they stopped participating. This two examples were very effective for the students because they will feel the opportunity to give thir point of view and because of this the students will be able to obtain more acknowldge from their participation. Another one was the Communication Climate is “the atmosphere that results from the students using verbal and non verbal communication and listening skills; can be defensive or supportive” (Oxford, University press USA, 3rd edition). One example that observed that the teacher was following this classroom skill was on the way she was talking to her students, she had a frienly tone of voice, she was very peaceful and at the same time she will make all the students feel comfortable without being judge. Another examplewas when the students were practicing the how to spell a word and she ask a student who was having problems with the letters and instead of making this students to fell bad she said “I know you arehaving a problem with spelling the words but what can I do to help you or what if we try this other method to spell maybe this one will help you to understan better”. This two examples are very good in a classroom and especially for the first grades in elementary because the students will get the confidence to say what they think without thinking that they will be judge, also this examples help her students because they comfortable knowing that they teacher knows that they are having problems and that she will do something to help them. The third one is Immediacy “ is a verbal and non verbal communication bahaviors that enhance physical and psycological closeness” (Mehrabian, 1969). “Immediate teachers are viewed as approachable, friendly, open, and resposive to students needs” (Cooper & Simonds, 2007, p.33).

As the children arrived, they removed their belongings and placed them in the cubbies. Afterwards, they grabbed their name tags and set their lunchboxes on the lunchbox table. It was obvious that Ms. Brown had created a plan for this lesson by observing the progression of the skills that were being taught and that they were presented in a logical order that aided student comprehension. Both the students and the teacher were familiar with the skills and the delivery. She also posts lesson plans online. Objectives and expectations of the lesson were communicated to the students on a special place on the board, at the front of the class with essential questions and " I can" statements. Ms. Brown was able to gain the students' attention for the lesson with a hook type activity. It was an engaging question for the student to answer that was related to the topic. Students worked independently, in pairs and in groups and read a selection either by themselves or with another student. The material was then presented in a graphic organizer by the teacher with illustrations and relevant examples provided by the students. They also read the selection (either our loud to a partner or to themselves) and then the material was displayed in the form of a graphic organizer for the visual learners. Ms. Brown used PowerPoint to present the material.…

At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer. After I entered into the classroom, the entire class welcomed me with “hello Ms. Flournoy”. It made my day to see all of those smiley faces greeting me. This was a 2nd grade classroom which consisted of 17 students of which 8 were girls and 9 were boys. This interview and observation was a total of 2 hours long. During the observation of Mrs. Lawrence classroom, I noticed how the students flocked under Mrs. Lawrence as she started reading one their favorite books before they did their afternoon lesson. For some reason I got an excitement about doing this interview.…

The setup of the classroom had four round tables with six seats for the capacity of 24 students in total. The round tables were placed as a ‘U’ with the opening towards the front of the classroom. There was a colorful rug in the middle of the ‘U”, with the alphabet displayed on it. With the placement of the tables, it was very easy for the teacher and teaching assistants to walk around to help any student in need. The colorful area rug was designed for out loud reading activities and lessons. The class was very organized. All toys, supplies and materials were labeled and put into storage bins in the back of the classroom where anyone can easily access it.…

I observed Mrs. Collier’s first grade class at J.B. Hunt elementary on Thursday September 13, 2015. The classroom had a great climate and was decorated nicely. She had bright posters hanging on the wall as well as many colorful boxes, curtains, and chairs around the room. The desks were set up in one giant “U” with Mrs. Collier sitting in the middle. It was a great set up for the kids because they could easily see her and she could easily see them. The dynamics in the classroom seemed great because she connected well with each student and was interested in what they had to say. The students behavior seemed very respectful towards her and they listened when she asked them to do something. Mrs. Collier’s equity between her and her students was…

Did they understand the words when they were spoken to them? Are they apple to read words associated with a photograph? Can they write words based on their knowledge and the lesson that was taught? Nutrition is taught every year in Kindergarten through 5th grade so a student of any level…ELL, SPED, Gifted, and Regular Education can be evaluated and previous years knowledge can be compared. Did the first grade beginning ELL student move up at least one level by second grade? Are they considered proficient by fifth grade? Portfolios can be made and follow the ELL student through school so that teachers can compare previous year’s work to the work they are doing that year. They can look for improvement in their English proficiency as well as the knowledge in the content areas being taught. As a teacher with ELL students I would not only look to teach them our English words for our foods but I would try to pull photographs of foods that might be important to their culture. I would try to find foods they are already familiar with and show them where they fit in the world of nutrition. Using this data would help create a comfort zone for them because they would at least recognize the photograph of the food and learn how we say it in…

My master teacher and I chose to build a student profile around Anthony Mireles. Throughout this process my master teacher is hoping Anthony will obtain the skills necessary to graph inequalities and find the x and y intercepts on a line. These skills will be obtained through small group tutoring as well as one on one tutoring, per the master teachers request. Anthony is a fourteen-year-old male and a freshman at Orestimba High School, this year he is in enrolled in Math I according to the common core standards. While Anthony often seems sand and distant in class, he is very friendly and respectful when approached. From an outer exterior it may seem as if Anthony has fallen in with the wrong crowd; however like any student he is eager to please and seems to respond well when given close proximity. It requires constant motivation from the teacher in order for Anthony to turn his assignment, and according to his teacher he has a large number of missing assignments. When the teacher or myself assist Anthony individually he appears more confident when solving problems. While Anthony seems to have some close friends he does not socialize much with the other students. This could be due to the fact that Anthony is an English learner, whose parents and siblings only speak Spanish. Technically…

This approach emphasizes academic, social, and emotional growth in a strong school community. The main practices of this approach are morning meeting, establishing rules, energizers, quiet time, and closing circle. Even though Science class was taught in the first period, their day officially started with the morning meeting. The children gathered in the large group area, greeted each other, had a small activity, and got the morning message from Ms. B. She also gave them the schedule of the day, and the rotation stations they were going to be working on that morning. The children are separated into four groups; blue, green, red, and orange. The students that needed extra help are part of the last two groups and are assisted by the general education teacher, special education teacher, or the teaching assistant in most rotations. The morning rotations were focused on reading and writing. There were five children in the red group, three of them had IEPs, and two were ELL students. Miguel is one of these students, he understands a little bit of Spanish, mainly speaks one of the Native Mayan Languages, and has been attending this school since February. Allan is the other ELL student in this group, he only speaks Spanish and has been attending this school since January. Ms. P had shared that the children who had IEPs in that class, either had a learning disability, or speech language impairment. This group began rotations with…
