Planaria are free-swimming mostly freshwater flatworms. Flatworms are very unique creatures because they regenerate lost parts. My groups experiment was, The Effect of Darker Regions on Planaria Movement. The purpose of this experiment was to see whether or not the planaria preferred the white region or the dark region. My hypothesis was, If the Planaria are placed on the white side then they will move to the dark side because the planaria have a strong negative geo-tropism and would move away from white side and go to the dark side. The independent variable was the two sides of the petri dish, which had one white region and one dark region. The dependent variable consisted of how many…

Tim finds himself staying in a marsh, shortly after arriving he meets four white men who briefly teach him survival. Tim went to Jamestown to turn himself in, but he ended up at the Steeds. Mr. Steed passed away, it was his son, Henry and his mother, Mrs. Steed who he meets. They don’t turn him in based on Mrs. Steed’s word. For five days he stays there but then returns to ‘his’ marsh. It was now autumn. The Choptank Indians tell Timothy that they owned the marsh, and he needed to buy it from them. He did so by stealing guns and awes from the Steed plantation and trading it for the land. Henry knows Tim stole his things but can’t prove it because Tim can hide infinite things in his marsh that no one could find but him. Then Pentaquod’s tribe is threatened by hunters and Henry Steed wants to marry Pentaquod’s daughter. The Steeds are ‘king’s’ people and Catholics, which is a conflicting problem. The king is dead, and Henry goes to ask Turlock and his family (Tciblento and 2 boys) to come stay with him under his mother Steeds order. Father Ralph is attacked for being papist, and his church in burned down. After seeing this Tim Turlock says “to hell with Catholics,” and moves back to the marsh. Meanwhile, a new 26 year old run away servant starts staying with the Choptanks. Paul and Ralph Steed go to Jamestown to vacate Tim Turlock’s past (indenture and…

Planaria are commonly known as flatworms. Ordinarily, these flatworms tend to stay near the edges or walls (Akiyama & Shitaro). They receive oxygen through their skin. They may not look like humans but their reactions to certain drugs or stimulants are quite similar to those of humans. Caffeine is known to increase individual’s energy and physical activity, leading to the question of how different concentrations of caffeine would affect planaria’s physical activity. Low doses of caffeine enhance oxygen consumption in these flatworms (Pagán, & Oné 2009). If planaria are put in the middle of a petri dish containing water, the lower the concentration of caffeine added to the water, the more oxygen planaria will obtain. That increase in the oxygen level will consequently allow them to move faster from the middle to the edge of the dish, their favorite location.…

The circulatory system is important in circulating blood, nutrients, oxygen and chemicals to the body. A circulatory system commonly consists of the fluid it contains, such as blood, a pumping vessel such as a heart, and the vessels, which carry the fluid through the body. In a closed circulatory system, the fluid, blood, is contained within the vessels as it circulates through the body. The Lumbriculus variegates, or blackworm, is commonly found in stagnant water along the edges of marshes and ponds. Blackworms have a closed circulatory system, which in the blackworm includes a large dorsal blood vessel [1]. Glucose is the most common carbohydrate and is classified as a monosaccharide and is a reducing sugar. Glucose is called blood sugar as well because it circulates in the blood. When blood glucose is high, the pancreas releases insulin, which then helps to transport glucose into muscle or liver cells. There, it's used for energy. If there's more glucose present than needed, insulin helps the glucose to be stored in adipose tissues as fat for potential future energy needs. One immediate effect of the breakdown and conversion of glucose into cellular energy is an increased metabolism, which can manifest itself in the form of increased heart rate, high blood pressure or some other form of arousal such as heightened mental alertness [4].…

The book I selected is called Horsefly and Honeybee, which is a fiction book written by Randy Cecil. This book is about a horsefly and a honey bee who fought over a flower and each lost a wing. Because they could no longer fly they were captured by a bullfrog and soon to be eaten. But, they decided to work together and use the remaining wings they had to fly away. By doing so, they escaped, became friends, and shared the flower. This book is at the instructional level for the majority of the class and is for ages four to eight and grades pre-k to third. However for a handful of students, who i’ve noticed are at a higher reading level than the rest of the class, this book would be somewhat simpler. But, the moral gained from the story is something…
