Tanglewood Case Study #1
Nellie J. Harris
HRM594-Strategic Staffing

Mr. Perrone, I am responding to your request to review Tanglewood’s staffing decisions currently in place. After reviewing Tanglewood’s 39 year history as well as current and potential competitors, I have reviewed the 13 sections per your request. Each recommendation is based on Tanglewood’s mission and values. Tanglewood is a 39 year old company looking to expand its’ organization while still maintaining its’ core values. Tanglewood believes in running its’ stores with a “strong base of employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and profitability” (Kammeyer-Mueller, 2012). Tanglewood must set itself apart from companies such as Kohl’s and Target. Tanglewood can accomplish this by maintaining and obtaining an exceptional staff that can provide customers with a high quality experience. The strategies discussed will help develop and maintain an optimal work environment that will yield strong employee relationships.

Statement Validation

Acquire or Develop Talent
Tanglewood is a 39 year if company. Between the original stores and the new acquired stores there are inconsistencies in the management styles. It is recommended that Tanglewood develop a leadership guide for all current and new managers to implement. All personnel should operate within the core values of Tanglewood. Developing the talent that is currently in place will be very beneficial for Tanglewood.
As Tanglewood grows it is taken into consideration that new talent will be hired throughout the organization. A set path should be developed and maintained to ensure newly acquired stores/staff are in line with the fundamental beliefs and practices of Tanglewood. When conditions permit, new employees will be hired that will bring new ideas and help the organization progress. At this time it is recommended that Tanglewood develop the talent of the managers and employees currently in place.

“Every organization must assume responsibility for its impact on employees, the environment, customers, and whomever and whatever it touches” (Maciariello, Pearce, &Yamawaki, 2010, p. 53). After reviewing the Tanglewood case, and exhibit 1.7 in chapter one of our text book Staffing Strategy, I felt the that the staffing levels and quality listed, developing talent and exceptional workforce are the most important strategy 's for the company to focus on because of the different cultures which are related to the different regions. Tanglewood has to differentiate it 's self from its competitors such as Kohl’s, Target, and Kmart by having a high level of employee expertise in their work performance and customer service to maintain and exceed the competition. Going back to any successful company you will notice that their internal culture is strong due its requirements. For instance people from the same region as the store will be a better fit for the job because they know the culture and will live in the same atmosphere as there workplace. According to Business monthly, “Tanglewood really needs to slow down and take a hard look at our corporate culture. Right now we need to consolidate and make sure we’re as close to the company’s original mission as we can be. Our success is due entirely to our strong culture-this is something we need to hold on to." These strategy’s decisions will help support Tanglewood work atmosphere and build a strong relationship among employees, which will lead to successful job performances.…

The best targets for Tanglewood are Branded and Open. “Branded”, it will allow them to describe the job in an appealing way. This would give potential employees a greater look into the organization and their expectations. Sales associates and customer service jobs are not as simply as people think. You have to have an “I can help you” mentality at all times. It takes patience to deal with multiple attitudes and personalities on a daily basis. I also feel that it will be more beneficial if Tanglewood used the open recruitment process. This would allow them to attract a diverse group of individuals. It would also help them to become successful in servicing all nationalities, which in turn could help them expand their customer base.…
