Tacoma Narrows Bridge Research Paper
The Tacoma Narrows bridge of 1940 was a disastrous, yet amazing, flawed, yet stunning structure. The Tacoma narrows bridge travels across the Puget Sound river, connecting Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. It was located in Washington State, before tragedy struck.
The bridge, the 3rd longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, was designed by a man named Leon Moiseff, helped by Elmer Maxwell Hayden, Clark Eldridge, Frederick Bert Farquharson, Lacey V. Murrow, and around 225 workers with a couple dozen engineers and support staff. Leon Moiseff was a leading designer in the U.S in the 1920-30’s. He also helped build the Manhattan bridge and the Benjamin Franklin bridge. Nicknamed “Galloping Gertie” by the men who worked on it. It was nicknamed this because the construction workers observed a vertical swaying in the deck.

It was 2800 feet long, 39 feet wide, and cost 6.4 million dollars to make. The pier construction was one of the most difficult things to make, do tot the fact that the water is over 200 feet deep and it's swift moving waters move at an average of 8.5 miles per hour, and sweep through the channel 4 times a day, making it very difficult to create them. The piers were the deepest ever to be constructed, almost doubling the previous record holder, the golden gate bridge.
To travel across the bridge, not only will you need to drive straight for 5939 feet, but you will have to pay 3 per axle on your vehicle.
