Abstract
International Studies (IS) program is a program offered by several universities, like De
La Salle University (DLSU), both locally and internationally. The program’s goal is to incorporate the culture, lifestyle and political practices of countries worldwide. This program also offers a variety of foreign languages to be studied as part of their curriculum. This research seeks to find the factors and the main reasons why IS students of DLSU are motivated to study such language courses. The data used were gathered through a survey conducted to thirty (30)
International studies Students of DLSU, with ten (10) students coming from each of the majors under the IS program. Data were also gathered through an interview with three (3) professors –
Ms. Yellowbelle Duaqui a Sociology professor, Dr. Luis Dery a history professor who has experienced learning a foreign language and Ms. Maria Tana who is a professor under the IS
Department. The survey contained nine (9) questions while the interview contained nine (9) questions - one (1) general question asked for all three of them and two (2) specific questions differently asked per interviewee. The study showed that majority of the International Studies students of De La Salle University are motivated to study a foreign language because they believe that it is useful in their future career and they desire to visit the countries in which the language is spoken.

The benefits of learning a foreign language go beyond learning a different culture or being able to communicate with people of different backgrounds. It is essential that Americans speak languages other than English in order to compete internationally, keep the country safe, and prepare children to be world citizens. Several language organizations, educators, and policy makers have recommended the introduction of a second language at the elementary school level as a way of assuring a high level of language proficiency (Pufahl and Rhodes 273).…

As a youngster, most people are taught to read and write, yet about 17% of the world’s population is not literate. I am fortunate to be viewed as proficient in two world-wide spoken languages. Learning how to be literate in a new language can be extremely rewarding in the long run because it opens more career opportunities and is useful to be accepted in an academically advanced institution. For instance, being bilingual in English and Spanish has given me the opportunity to travel to the United States to receive a proper education in a safe environment. In order to reach the level of English I have right now, I had to go through several obstacles, including numerous classes…

Learners’ motivation has become more commonly recognized as perhaps the major determining factor for successful learning in general, whether one is a high school student pushing one's way through the battery of required courses needed to graduate, or an adult learner taking distance education courses. In any learning setting, the dynamics of motivation will be different. What will help a high school student sustain motivation may not apply to an adult learner, for example. Similarly, what factors affect and enhance learner motivation in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting (in our case) will differ as well. Furthermore, motivation for EFL learners in a middle school or high school class will differ from the experience of an EFL adult learner.…

Some academic programs require or strongly recommend that students complete an international studies experience and at a few schools, a study-abroad experience is mandatory for all students. Students majoring in a foreign language, international relations, international studies, international business or other similar program are strongly encouraged, and sometimes required, to attend school overseas. Regardless of the school's policies, students are very often inspired intellectually either because the overseas education offers something beyond what is offered at their home school or because they are physically close to the subject of their studies.…
