Synthesis of E and Z Isomers of Α-Phenylcinnamic Acid
Introduction:
This experiment focuses on carrying out a Perkin Reaction to synthesize (E) and (Z) isomers of α-phenylcinnamic acid. This was accomplished by refluxing benzaldehyde, phenylacetic acid, acetic anhydride and triethylamine as a base. The chemical equation of a Perkin Reaction can be seen below. The reaction mechanism for the synthesis of α-phenylcinnamic acid is shown below:

Therefore, phenylacetic acid is the limiting reagent.

    I then measured and placed 100 mg (0.10 g) of 1,3-diphenylacetone and 100 mg (0.10 g) of Benzyl into the concial vial. I followed this by placing 0.5 ml of triethylene glycol and then equipped the vial with a condenser as before. The lab consisted of several steps, which include extraction, distillation and filtration. Based on the active ingredient crystals that were obtained at the end of filtration, the melting point was found.
