Synthesis of Adipic Acid
Experiment 8: Synthesis of Adipic Acid

Performed November 8th & 10th
By
Jennifer Seitz

Organic Chemistry 344
Section 803
Fall 2011

Objective: The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize adipic acid from cyclohexanol via an oxidation reaction that was catalyzed by sulfuric acid. Purity of the product was assessed by measuring the melting point.

Procedure:

Part I: Sodium dichromate dehydrate (14.99g) was placed in a 100 mL beaker and dissolved in 30.0 mL of water where it was observed to turn a neon orange color. The solution was cooled in an ice-water bath and 8.0 mL of sulfuric acid was slowly added to it in 1.0 mL portions. The chromic acid solution was then mixed until homogeneous and cooled to 10.00C in an ice-water bath. While the solution was cooling, 9.0 mL of sulfuric

In order to perform this experiment, a distillation apparatus was assembled. 4.0mL of H3PO4 and 3.0mL of cyclohexanol was placed in the round-bottom flask as sell as 5 drops of H2SO4 and a magnetic stir bar. The flow of water was then started through the condenser and the reaction mixture was heated while the magnetic stir rod began stirring. Once distillation was complete and no more liquid distilled, or the thermometer rose above 85 degrees Celsius, the heat was turned off and the products were collected in a small test tube. Once cooled, what was left was an organic top layer and a bottom layer. A Pasteur pipette was used to remove the majority of the bottom layer and was placed into a separate labeled container. Placing .25g of anhydrous calcium chloride into the test tube dried the top organic layer which was then left to stand for 5 min. a clean 5-mL vial was weighed and using a Pasteur pipette, the liquid was removed from the test tube and transferred to the tared sample vial and weighed.…

The objective of the experiment was to reduce Benzil, using sodium borohyride as the reducing agent. In a benzil reduction, there are five possible products than can occur, specifically a racemic mixture of benzoin, racemic mixture of hydrobenzoin, or meso-hydrobenzoin. Therefore, three different tests were conducted in determining the identity of the product: melting point, thin light chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy.…

Introduction: Kinetics, which is the study of how fast a reaction takes place or in other words the rate of a reaction, is the main ideology in this experiment. Reaction rates can be measured in a number of ways: by monitoring the amount of product formed, by measuring the loss in mass of reactants, for reactions involving gaseous products measuring the volume of gas produced, by electrolytic conductivity, pH measurement or for colored reactants or products measuring the transmittance by the use of a colorimeter. In this experiment the last method of measurement is used which is colorimetry.…
