Course Description
This is a four-unit course designed to help nonnative speakers of English communicate effectively
in academic and professional settings. Development of oral skills that prepare nonnative speakers of English to present ideas extemporaneously, lead class discussions, give lectures or speeches before audience, respond to questions posed by audience, and improve through self-evaluation of speech. Aims
• To present information to a general audience, making the material relevant to the level and interest of the listeners
• To lead a discussion on a controversial topic on one’s choice
• To evaluate one’s own recorded performance and those of one’s peers
• To gain skill in speaking extemporaneously

• Reinhart, S. (2013). Giving Academic Presentations. University of Michigan Press (2nd edition).

Participation
Everyone will be expected to participate fully in course activities. Participation includes:
• contributing to discussions,
• being prepared to discuss the readings,
• asking questions to presenters,
• giving feedback to peers after presentations, and
• making impromptu speeches when relevant
The point is that you make every effort possible to contribute to discussions in meaningful ways.
Remember, this is a public speaking course, so let’s speak!!!

Your homework will involve reading chapters in the book, preparing for your performances, writing up
