Course Description

This course provides students with an in-depth focus on cultural factors and cross-cultural perspectives in the field of psychology. Students learn to identify and consider cultural variables in the application of psychological theories and practices. Multicultural issues and valued diversity are the main content focus throughout the course.

    It is obvious just by what we have experienced in this course so far that researchers would need to utilize different methods when conducting multicultural research as opposed to traditional research. Traditional psychological research has always employed the idea of absolutism, whereas multicultural psychological research takes on more of an anthropological attitude of relativism. An absolutist attitude gives far more credit to biological and genetic factors, whereas a relativist attitude suggests more of influence of cultural and societal factors. Traditional psychological research typically utilizes the standard psychological tools that were not developed with other cultures in mind. On the other hand Multicultural research would tend to utilize psychological instruments developed with that particular culture in mind if they use any psychological instruments at all. Many multicultural researchers or relativists conduct a large portion of their research through observation. Through observation many researchers are then able to set norms for that particular culture, and then can possibly develop a psychological instrument for use with that particular culture. Also it is important to note that traditional psychological research has a tendency to generalize findings to entire populations regardless of culture. This is a result of many older European and American psychologists having an absolutist attitude and believing that culture has no bearing on psychology.     Some people may wonder what a multicultural psychology is. According to Webster dictionary multicultural is relating to, reflecting, or adapted to diverse cultures (Webster.com). Psychology is defined as the study of mind and behavior in relation to a particular field of knowledge or activity (Webster.com). Therefore multicultural psychology is the organized study of each and every aspect of an individual’s activities as it occurs in the environment inhabitant by diverse cultural backgrounds interacts with each other. It focuses on behavior those different thought processes of individuals, the environment that surrounds them, what makes an individual’s behavior normal or abnormal, and how the different items correlate. Significant concepts of multicultural psychology include race, ethnicity, and culture (Hall, 2010). According to Webster a race is a group is a diverse population of individuals distinguished from other individuals (dictionary.com). Most of the perception that defines an individual race are those based on skin color, skin texture, descent, heredity, and nationalized origin.
