The Associated Press (AP) is an American news agency that was established in 1846 by five daily newspapers from New York City. They established the cooperation in order to deliver news about the Mexican War faster than the U.S. Post Office could. The known founder was Moses Yale Beach and the first CEO, named Alexander Jones, came to power in 1848. Today the company is run by Tom Curley who has been the active CEO since 2003. Curley is stationed in the AP headquarters located in New York City. The AP is, just like it always has been, a not-for-profit cooperation now owned by 1,500 newspapers from all over the country.

As of 2005, the Associated Press had approximately 1,700 newspapers and 5,000 radio and television companies republishing and referencing the AP’s news gathers. AP has a huge international staff with 242 news bureaus in more than 120 countries all over the world and their ultimate vision is to become the essential global news network. With a photography library holding some of the world’s most famous pictures from which they have won 30 Pulitzer Prices for pictures. Their journalists are also delivering top notch information and 19 Pulitzer Prices have been won for writing. The latest Pulitzer Price won was in 2007 by Oded Balilty for his breaking news photography.
