Switches and Routers
Assignment: Router and Switch Configuration • Due Date: Day 7 • Describe how to configure a switch and router in a 350- to 750-word paper in APA format. Be sure to include the following: o Basics of installing, setting up, and configuring a switch o User interface console and the purpose of each menu item o Configuring VLANs and spanning tree protocol o Basics of installing, setting up, and configuring a router o The different comment modes of a router • At least four routing protocols and the purpose of using these protocols

This is as far as I have gotten and I’m very confused about routers.

Router and Switch Configuration Switches and routers are key components to operating any network. Switches can break up a large area network into smaller segments. This will free up congestion and provide more bandwidth to each port, which will increase network performance. The first step is to plug into a power source, connect the console port to a computer or modem with UTP cabling and an RJ-45 cable, and use the command line interface (CLI) to configure and manage the switch in user exec mode and privilege exec mode. In most cases, the switch will perform a power on self-test. The manual will indicate the particulars of any failure. One must configure a password because the switch arrives without one. This provides security through the console settings menu and the password configuration option while one may also incorporate an encrypted password option. Entering global configuration through the command line option will change passwords, also. To change the IP configuration, one would choose the [I] key and choose the IP address option and set the Subnet mask and Default gateway. Creating a VLAN requires switching to Global Configuration mode and using vlan vlan# name name_of_vlan command. To add more VLAN ports, go to the Interface Configuration Mode

Fred Jones, a distant relative of yours and president of Deals-R-Us Brokers (DRUB), has come to you for advice. DRUB is a small brokerage house that enables its clients to buy and sell stocks over the Internet, as well as place traditional orders by phone or fax. DRUB has just decided to offer a set of stock analysis tools that will help its clients more easily pick winning stocks, or so Fred tells you. Fred’s information systems department has presented him with two alternatives for developing the new tools. The first alternative will have a special tool developed in C++ that clients will download onto their computers to run. The tool will communicate with the DRUB server to select data to analyze. The second alternative will have the C++ program running on the server, the client will use his or her browser to interact with the server.…

If I was configuring switches for a VLAN system, I would say that I would do it quite similar or perhaps the same as configuring routers for the LAN system. As for configuring a switch in general, a visual switch manager or management console, management console being a component of windows 2000 and its successors that provides system administrators and advanced users an interface for configuring and monitoring the system, is…

The type of cabling used to design a building that will house computers and electrical engineering labs will be mostly copper and some fiber optic cabling. Out of all of the different metals and wire out there, copper is the best conductor out of all of them. You can get more power in a piece of copper than with any other option you have. This makes it efficient and helps you get the job done better than you could otherwise. A lot of electrical wiring will need to be flexible in a building of this capacity. In the designing you might have to go into a very precarious angle to get the job done. Even though it has some flexibility, you are not going to lose any toughness, either. It is not brittle when you bend it, so it will not crack or break. Safety is a huge issue with wiring as a result; it really takes a lot to melt a copper wire. Therefore, if you are worried about safety, copper wire is going to be one of your best options. If an overload or surge comes through the wire, it is not likely to melt or burn. This means that your odds of a fire starting as a result of a power problem are going to be greatly decreased. When materials other than copper are used in high volume buildings, they can sometimes loosen where they are connected and come unattached. This can lead to some seriously dangerous conditions and waste a lot of time fixing everything. This can cause an incompatibility problem in the future. If you try and run a non-copper wire up to a copper wire, it could cause a galvanic action and start some serious problems. This could effectively destroy the copper wire that it is attached to. This could cause serious work in repairing the entire system. Getting copper from the beginning will make everything a lot easier in the long run. The tools used in this particular building are cable ties, clamps, crimpers, cutters, strippers, electrical testers, fuse pullers, heat guns, loom and conduit tools, piles,…
