Life isn’t easy. There isn’t a cheat sheet or an instructions manual to tell you how to sail through life smoothly. Even though life has its ups and downs like rough tides during a storm in the sea, there are influences that will keep you afloat, moving forward, with a head held high. There was a time in my life when things were quite bleak; a time where I was on the brink of losing myself. As nice as it would have been to have my very own “easy button” from Staples, I learned that people and my environment can make life worthwhile. Finding a dream, a purpose, a hobby, or even an obsession is a great starting point to the road of happiness. If there is something to look forward to, then it’s something worth leaving the past behind for. I created a new goal for myself, to enter university and become a nurse. Besides a purpose in life, I found new interests like watching shows, dramas, and Justin Bieber. I’ve strengthened my passion for the arts as well. Art has been a positive influence in my life since it expresses my emotions in a creative visual and vocal way. Thanks to my love for art, I am more confident in sharing my talent with others like when I sung at the talent show. As ridiculous as it is, I always wish on the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour every night. Even though it isn’t the year of 2011 anymore, it’s very comforting to me. About two years ago I didn’t have any dreams; I didn’t have anything that made me happy. I lost my reason to exist, I lost myself. Actually I did have dreams, but they were just stripped away from me so I had none left. If disappointment had a flavor, it would be very bitter. I wanted to pursue a future in graphic design but my family had other plans. Like any other parent, my mom wished for me to have the brightest future I could get, and in their eyes it was a job in the medical field but a brighter future should be a future where I too am happy shouldn’t it? I wasn’t happy with my situation

I began to wonder what I could do to help. Complaining about my problems would not fix anything, so I thought I would draw for people to make them happy. So for a long time, I thought being an artist was my career choice. It dawned on me that art is more of an emotional relief if one is making it. I then realized that counseling would be an amazing way to let people express themselves, but I still wanted people to express their way through art. Although I have not figured how to combine the two, I do know that college is my next step to pursuing my dream, and helping heal the…

I had always heard the same thing, “Graduate from a good college and find a decent living, and you’ll be happy and successful.” Hah! What a capitalistic, factory-produced, mind-n(d)umbing fairy tale to tell impressionable children, I thought. Nope, I was smarter than that. I would be the one to take the road less traveled—to go against the grain and live my own life the way I wanted to. After barely graduating high school with a GED (or a GED equivalent actually…), I took off to LA to become a music-producer. I was going to be big. I learned the trade, worked inside multi-million dollar studios, and formed a band. I had it all figured out and I was going to show everybody that school was for fools. As with everything in life, this intoxicating success did not last. I began to feel something was missing. Here I was, living the dream that I had imagined for myself, and yet, I didn't feel much fulfillment.…

Many people have dreamed their dreams since they were young, constantly believing that if they reach them they’ll achieve complete happiness. For many people, they follow a certain path with their dream in mind, and gear everything they have towards achieving it. Sometimes, however, when life gets in the way, people are required to push their dreams to the side in order to focus on things that are more important at the moment. If people have to do this for a long period of time, it usually begins to wear on them, and the effects of their deferred dreams begin to show. In Langston Hughes’s poem “Harlem”, he implies that these deferred dreams are toxic to the person that harbors them.…

Growing up in a very horrid environment can often be too influential to the point where it drives much of the youth, like myself, to ignore their dreams. However, I am an exception of this situation. I have primarily grown up in the urban area of Detroit, Michigan with many negative influences surrounding myself and others. Constant violence and crimes being committed was becoming normal for the east side of Detroit, in which I was living. It is clear to see that no child would be able to have a positive, effective future being near all of that commotion. Fortunately, my family and I were able to escape those particular troubles and move to a place where the community was more welcoming and beneficial. Aside from the general living conditions,…

Ever since I was younger, I’ve had a large imagination, filling up my days dreaming up endless scenarios of the future. Thinking of possible careers was never a problem, but choosing out of the many life paths I wanted was. I alternated between wedding planner, creating a notebook filled with torn out pages of poofy dresses and possible wedding locations; author, stuffing short stories and poems into a floral folder; and psychiatrist, researching the process to become a doctor. The thought that these may not be options for me never crossed my mind. I only knew I would do whatever I could to live out the future I saw in my mind.…

The Arts have called my name for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dabbled in any intensively creative and performative thing that was in the immediate vicinity. I would go around telling all my peers that when I grew up, I was going to have any one of a number of extravagant careers: I would promise to become a famous actress on Monday, declare myself a world-class musician on Wednesday and swear to grow to be a best-selling novelist by Friday. The Arts, and all they encompassed, were my first love. It only seemed natural to me, like eating or blinking, that my life should be dedicated to the very thing that made me the happiest. I finally took my ambitions to heart my first year of high school, where I eagerly sought out beginning…

I have never been the kind of person that knows what they are supposed to be. While that is certainly not a unique condition, I have felt at times that my uncertainty was to an almost comical degree. As a kid, I tried dozens of sports and was successful at approximately zero of them. In an effort to get me to do something, my parents put me in art classes, science camps, sports leagues, and other kinds of activities we could barely afford, but none of them stuck. With little exaggeration, I feel like I was in every activity and program offered to under-twelve lower-middle class children. However, there was a point when all of these activities came to an unsettling halt. In what I like to describe as, “the only interesting thing that has ever…

Robert H. Goddard said, “It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow”. When we are in pre-school, we are asked what we want to be when we grow up. Our answers were things like an astronaut, doctor, veterinarian, and a rock star. These people were heroes to us, and they were what we dreamed to become. We dreamed of helping others, and we dreamed that we could be anything that we wanted to be. We were creative and imaginative, so we let our dreams run wild and free. No one told us that we could not be what we wanted; instead we were encouraged to chase those crazy dreams and let nothing get in our paths. Today, it is the complete polar opposite. Now when we are asked what…
