1) Discuss your thoughts on what makes something “good” for society?
Before we define something whether they are good for society or not, we should consider what a good society is. In thinking about the characteristics of a good society, different people tend to emphasize different things that they consider to be important. However, there might be some characteristics of a good society that nearly everyone would agree on and what factors that can help a society to accomplish these goals would be the things that “good” for society.
From my perspective, a good society should be a place that everyone could have his or her basic needs met. Everything that could help people maintain their basic needs would be the factors that good for this society. It is true that in our society, there are still many people have no shelters, suffer from starvation or endure the poverty. Any methods which could help people who are unable to access to basic human needs would be the factors that make the society better. Such as providing some shelters for homeless people and providing job opportunities for people who lose their jobs, etc. Both are the things that could help people escape from severe conditions they face to. With no doubt, they are the elements that could make people live better, help the society maintain in peace and contribute to improving a society. In this sense, they are the things good for society.
Also, there are other basics that nearly everyone desires: tasty food, comfortable housing, transportation, a clean and healthy environment, healthcare, meaningful work, regular exercise, rejuvenating leisure, fulfilling relationships, family, and a close-knit community. None of these is essential but life without at least a few of them is not much fun.
