Sustainability Action Plan
Introduction
As businesses continue to meet the increasing demand of consumers, their impact on the environment and production of waste is amplified significantly. Carbon footprint and CO2 emissions become an even greater concern when the product must be transported to customers across the globe. In fact, CO2 emissions from transporting products alone accounted for 1.2 billion tons of CO2, or 4.5 percent of global emissions in 2012 (citation). While increased waste and pollution are an inevitable byproduct of manufacturing and delivering products, companies in the telecommunications industry are making sustainable practices the forefront of their business plan. Firms such as Cox Communications are restructuring their entire business processes to reduce their impact in manufacturing as well delivering their products to customers. As of early 2013 Cox Communications had invested over five billion dollars in alternative energy, water and energy conservation, eco-friendly shipping fleets and waste management. As a result of their efforts, Cox prevents over fifty thousand tons of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the environment annually, while simultaneously increasing their bottom line.
As the business world begins to place more emphasis on sustainable practices, innovative firms who embrace sustainability will be light-years ahead of their competition. In the following pages we will look at Cox’s sustainability program as a model for businesses in a variety of industries to effect the change necessary to be competitive in an ever changing business world. Additionally, we will look at challenges companies face in implementing sustainable practices as well as opportunities that can benefit companies, stakeholders and the environment.
Cox Conserves- Sustainability Initiative
The Cox Conserves program was implemented in 2007 as part of the company’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Several companies and industries are trying or have the intention to implement their strategy e.g. to reduce carbon emission. The company UBS is seriously active in corporate responsibility (CR) for some time. However, according to environmental specialists and senior executives at UBS, UBS lagged behind its competitors concerning their public commitment to help mitigate global warning. The working group suggested the adoption of a more progressive policy. Policy options range from stabilizing UBS’ current carbon emission, which means no CO2 reduction, to carbon neutrality, which means 100% CO2 reduction.…

    Sustainability Plan

A Sustainability Plan can take many forms. Depending on the size, type and capacity of your organization, your Sustainability Plan could be a two-page document that focuses on a long-term vision and broad goals, or a one hundred-page document that outlines specific targets, quantitative indicators and a detailed timeline. What is important is that your organization takes the first step to holistically managing the impacts – both positive and negative – that your organization has on the environment, community and economy. STEP ONE – DEVELOP A VISION The first step in sustainability planning is to envision what your organization could be like in ten, twenty or fifty years. How would it enhance the community? How would it contribute to the local economy? How could it be a good environmental steward? Creating a vision of your ideal organization will help guide you on your path to a sustainable future. STEP TWO – EVALUATE CURRENT IMPACT Once you have envisioned the future of your organization, you must then determine how your current operations match up with your vision. Evaluating the level and significance of your current impacts will allow you to properly focus your efforts. STEP THREE – SET GOALS & TARGETS Using your vision and current impacts as a guide, determine what longterm goals you have for your organization. Then use these goals to determine what interim-targets you need to set to send you towards your goal. STEP FOUR – PLAN & ACT Now that you have your goals and targets, it’s time to determine what specific actions will get you there. Break it down to specific activities, practices or policies and then make sure someone is responsible for each item. Over time these small steps will help your organization achieve its long-term vision.…

    Millipore

David Newman began the scenic drive back from Millipore’s manufacturing plant in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, to his office at corporate headquarters in the Boston suburbs. He had spent the morning with the plant’s engineers touring their latest solutions to increase recycling of water and chemicals in the manufacturing process. Newman was encouraged by how many innovative ideas were emerging at the Jaffrey plant and Millipore’s other facilities to improve their environmental performance, and was delighted that most of the ideas also reduced operating costs to such an extent that the investments required had short payback periods. It was another example of how far the company had come in the two years since Millipore’s Chairman, CEO, and President Martin Madaus had announced his desire to shift the company onto a path toward environmental sustainability. After receiving some positive feedback from the few senior managers with whom he initially shared this idea, Madaus had moved ahead by creating a Sustainability Initiative and appointing Newman to a new role of director of sustainability to lead the development and implementation of the corporate-wide initiative. Since then, Newman had been working with engineers and managers at Millipore facilities around the world to develop and implement projects to reduce the company’s environmental impacts. These efficiency projects had reduced electricity consumption by over 5 million kilowatt hours (KWh) per year, eliminated the need for 35,000 therms of natural gas per year, and reduced water consumption by 113 million gallons per year.…

The benefits of a triple bottom line approach to business are numerous. Many companies find that looking at their operations "through a sustainability lens" helps them identify opportunities that they were previously unaware of. Cost savings opportunities are identified that help drive waste out of organizations, reducing their environmental impact. The benefits go beyond the obvious financial and environmental gains, however. Sustainability programs give companies an opportunity to distinguish themselves from their competitors. Studies show that employees want to work for socially responsible companies, so an effective sustainability program will aid in the recruiting of new hires. Proactively reducing harmful environmental practices can also potentially reduce liability and can keep organizations one step ahead of future regulatory changes that may restrict, or even outright ban, practices that are currently allowed.…
