Assignment 07:

The scene

My own ecological footprint:
I would say my ecological footprint is contributed by the following:
Consuming only South African grown food, that saves the energy and transport costs.
Using public transports that reduces traffic and costs.
Recycling most things that also is good for environment.
I switch off the lights when I leave the house.

This does not only meet the present needs but also not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
This has been a huge eye opener and thinking of the topics like teenage pregnancy, this is not helping us as a country to be sustainable and developed as the resources are less than the population.

My comment:
“It's all in the outcome - Consequentialism” – utilitarianism and the sustainability problem
“We living in a failed world but I believe child poverty can be controllable. We can use the country’s resources to good use than investing in unnecessary things like child grants misused by parents to buy themselves the latest clothes in the shops and styling their hair with the money meant to assist with child poverty and also funds used for developing townships instead of developing villages. Clinics can be built in rural areas, were currently they travel long distances to access clinics and on top of that transport is not easily accessible and expensive to the poor.”
The above is what I stated in my assignment 3. If teenage pregnancy was to be eliminated in our country this would make a huge difference.

“Fair’s Fair - Distributive Justice”
As mentioned in “Brundland report, Quadrant IV” A developed country and sustainable economic footprint, only shows that the needs are being met and the ability of future generations to meet their needs are not being compromised.
Knowledge is there to be shared to the next generation.

“Greenies - Environmental Ethics”
If we take care of our resources, they will take care of us too. With that said, we can avoid conditions like global

There is a time where people wonder what the world is going to come to. Is there going to be a time where we run out of resources, or will we run out of room and become over populated? It is natural to wonder these types of questions. So we as humans need to come up with a solution on how we can maintain what we have now before it is gone and we have no future to look forward to. By doing this we can ensure that our children and our children’s children.…

Nowadays the concept of sustainability is widely recognized in many corporations, organizations, government sectors and even in school or university. From my opinion, Sustainability is needed on a global (macro) scale, on macro-micro scale (government, NGO’s and business) and also on an individual level. The causes are: Greed and rent seeking, scarcity of resources, misuse of power, wrong moral and ethical standards. The Effects are: Climate change, rising inequality in almost all parts of the world (GINI Index), consumerism, corruption, abuse of ecosystems, etc.. Civil societies, governments and some businesses are asking for change and the creation of a “balanced social justice”. In case of abuse of social justice by one of the three major “participants” of the system (business, governments, NGOs), a vicious circle will occur and the organism is doomed to fail.…

When the industrial revolution first came, people did not pay much attention to its effects on the environment, for in the early stages, the damages were not apparent. The fact that industrial activity immensely benefited people resulted in worldwide rapid growth of industries. However, the more the industries spread, the more nature suffered. People eventually became aware that not only did manufacturing factories cause air, water, and land pollution, but they also destroyed natural resources. Once the environmental damages had become more obvious, the issues could not be neglected any longer. The environmental concerns have now received attention from all segments of human society. Numerous treaties, laws and regulations have been enacted in order to maintain the environment and natural resources.…

There are 1 billion children living in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world), 40 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water. Every second 4 people die from hunger; around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted. Even though in 2008, according to UN, the majority of the world population is living in the urban, people are still suffering from poverty and hunger, even malnutrition. The poverty issue is getting more serious than ever, we have to do something to end it. To end poverty, environmental sustainability is the largest barrier, because everyone depends on natural resources for one’s live hood; basically all the natural resources are somehow vital. Lack of natural resources can also affect the sustainability of the country’s society. Climate change, in my opinion, is the most and critical issue. Pollution problem is one of the major environmental problems we have to face, because pollution will lead climate changes, for example, global warming. So if we are serious about preventing the world from climate change, we have to deal with the pollution issue all over the world first.…

Sustainable development is defined as ‘the ability to meet our generation’s needs without compromising the needs of future generations, it contains two main theories, the concept of needs which is based on the idea of providing support to those whom are less fortunate, the second theory is called the idea of limitations which is based on the ability to have our technology meet our present needs without harming future generations’. There are many ways you can define sustainable development but they all relate to the fact that sustainable development is a system that connects space and time. One example of sustainable development being a system over a space is with air, ‘pollution from North America affects air quality in Asia, and pesticides sprayed in Argentina could harm fish on the coast of Australia’. In regards to construction sustainable development is becoming an increasing demand because it makes sense for both the owner and the operators. This is because sustainable development techniques not only are environmentally friendly or ‘green’, and they also help improve relationships with stakeholder groups.…

As an archaeologist, one will often be asked what the use of studying the past is—surely, it does not matter so much; it’s over and done with. It is true that many people fail to grasp the importance of knowing our past, of knowing how people used to live and survive in a world that was not always safe or stable.…
