Surviving in the Wilderness
SURVIVING IN THE WILDERNESS

The risk taken when adventuring in the wilderness can be a fatal one if one is

unprepared and lacking some basic tools and knowledge. There are three basic points

when dealing with wilderness survival. The first being food then shelter then warmth.

This paper is going to give details and insight into each of the three points.

Food, as anyone would know, is vital to survival. Whenever planning to take an

adventure, always pack enough food and water to avoid the stress and inconvenience of

looking for sustenance. If one is caught in a situation where food is not readily available

there are plenty of sources in the wilderness. Fish is a great food for a balanced diet and

is available anywhere in the world, and a good thing to know is that all birds are able to

be eaten. Sap from a poplar is sweet and can be eaten raw. If one is at an oceanic

wilderness, all seaweed is edible. If one is stranded in the arctic, all vegetation is edible

with the exception of mushrooms. Deer is probably the best meat to have in the, wilder-

ness though it may be hard to hunt without the proper equipment. When hunting and

eating remember fat is a very important part of survival. Blood gives one the nutrition

one need and it can be added into sups and other foods, and is easy to find on most

evergreens. A good source of heat and energy is Spruce tea. Spruce tea is

easy to make, all one need is spruce needles and hot water. When eating plants, it is

important to know what plants one are eating to avoid further discomfort. There are

certain plants that can kill you within hours.

Water is very important especially when in tropical or dry places. Be sure to

bring plenty of containers to gather water in. A normal human can only go a few days

without water in a dry or tropical place where sweating can lead to dehydration. When

looking for drinking water, look

The 2007 Film Into the Wild tells the story of Chris McCandless, an unsatisfied college graduate who leaves his family and promising future behind to live a life of isolation in the Alaskan wilderness. While John Krakauer’s essay “Death of an Innocent” portrays Chris is an extremely heroic light by likening him to “a monk gone to God,” Into the Wild leaves much more room for debate by presenting Chris as selfish and detached. Chris, however, is not the only character whose actions can be interpreted as heroic or not. The peripheral female characters also act in ways that put themselves at risk. While the female characters take personal risks to fulfill their need for relationships, Chris takes selfishly motivated physical chances, ultimately disregarding all human relationships; this binary begs the question then of which is more heroic—truly caring about people and empathizing? Or being independent and avoiding emotional engagement?…

Perseverance: when the going gets tough, the tough get going. When hiking the AT, you always want to keep a certain number of miles a day, like 20. Either that or don’t stop until you find a shelter on the trail. It’s much safer there than sleeping in the middle of nothing where all you have is a pair of toe nail clippers, which goes back to preparation: always bring a knife or two unless you want to give the bear a pedicure. A lot of people drop out of the AT because they don’t have the perseverance it takes to go through. They always say, “It wasn’t what I expected”. The guy driving the two men to the start of the AT said that to them and said, “What do they expect, escalators?”…

Many Native American cultures for example, made being a successful hunter a character quality of vital importance to having a high place in the tribe. For others however, hunting is a dietary choice. Many prefer the quality of game meat over domestic meats for a variety of reasons. Meat from hunting does not go through the chemical related processes of domestic meats, and the animals’ food is all natural and free of any supplements or added hormones. For others, they simply enjoy the taste more, or the self-reliance of providing their own meals. And still for others, hunting is a matter of sport and enjoyment. The first thing that you should worry about is deciding where to go. There are three ways for you to decide your direction which is observing the sun to determine the west and east are, creating and improvised compass by using metal hair clip or needle and lastly by studying the overall environment. Having a compass does increase you chance of surviving but if fails, look at vegetation area on how plant react to get the sunlight or search for river and follow it the most important thing is always be ready to any consequences. Furthermore being resourcefulness is a must if you want to survive in the jungle. This is because we need food, water and shelter. The natural way to get water is by making hole on the bamboo and collect water accumulate on leaves or tree branch by licking it. Fruits are your best options for food but make sure it is edible to eat. Besides, try to hunt for animals and always bring survival tools on trips and hikes. Next, the third tips is build a camp. Do not ever sleep on the ground. You need to search for a tree with sturdy branches, decide on a good spot where its branches are closely together than platform can be created. Gather three fallen branches which are strong enough to support your weight. Caves also can be a good shelter but do not forget to create fire to prevent wild animals from reaching you. Cabase (n.d.) also state that the fourth tips is never give up. Surviving in a jungle does not only require physical and emotional strength but it also require patience especially hunting for food in order to survive. Remember that you will fail if you quit trying. The last tips is have faith in Him. Keep in mind that He is always by your side. If you feel alone and confused, pray and ask for guidance.
