Investigating the effect of surface area to volume ratio on Osmosis
As far as living organisms are concerned, they are all made up of cells whereas, the membrane surrounds all those cells. The cell membrane has the key responsibility to maintain a stable interval environment. Even though, Cell membrane is made up of phospholipids bilayer and has that great amount flexibility making it unbreakable while transportation of substances. However, certain substances such as, dissolved gases, sugars, salt and liquid find it difficult to pass through the cell membrane and, Substances like Oxygen and, Carbon Dioxide can effortlessly pass through the cell membrane making the cell membrane semi permeable. It is considered that objects with greater surface area to volume are smaller in size compare to the objects that are larger in size but, have smaller Surface area to volume ratios. For example, if the cube has surface area of six cm² and volume of one cm3, the SA: Vol of that same cube would be 6:1. However, if the cube that has larger surface area of 54 cm² and Volume 27 cm3, the Surface area to volume ratios of that larger object would be 2:1. Not only this, the surface area affects the rate of osmosis. In other words, it means that the larger the surface area, the easier is it for molecules to cross the membrane. On the other hand, the smaller the surface area, the more difficult it is for molecules to cross the cell membrane. The amount of water concentration or the difference in water potential, is an important factor in speed of osmosis. The greater the disproportion, the rapid the reaction will happen. Temperature plays a crucial role in the speed of osmosis whereas, the higher the temperature, the faster the water will travel across semi permeable membrane.
