Supplier relationship management for the supply chain competitiveness
2.1 Introduction
With the increasing competition in global market and a variety of choices available for consumers, supplier relationship management is now receiving much attention in business strategy. “Competitive forces are putting firms under pressure to improve quality, delivery performance, and responsiveness while simultaneously reducing costs. In response, firms are increasingly exploring ways to leverage their supply chains, and in particular, to systematically evaluating the role of suppliers in their activities” (Vijay and Keah, 2006, p.755). The way to create the competitive supply chain is to begin supplier relationship that will benefit both parties by utilizing supplier’s latest technology and core competency.
In process category, close relationships with key suppliers help a firm in the way of cost savings, value-adding to the quality, shorter lead time, and improved transportation facility or delivery service. In strategic category, increased market share and competitiveness, responsiveness, improved product quality, innovative design, flexibility in developing effective solutions, guarantees, invest on fixed assets and technology, sharing market risk, improving business ties, collaboration, and continuity should be achieved as sustainable long-term objective. To achieve this, a good business relationship function must be established.
2.2 Business Relationship Functions
“The business relationship functions are derived from two basic roles they play in economic systems. First, business relationship functions are the means by which the benefits are realized in a society, and they provide the structure within which knowledge and ideas are transported in business relationships. Second, through the buyer-supplier relationship in question, firms are able to make use of the activities, resources, and outputs of other firms, and to combine and coordinate them in order to produce and deliver products/services valued by buyers” Young et al. (2009)

    A buyer should be ultimately striving to maintain a dominant power leverage position over their supply base. It is never wise to allow a supplier to have more power or the dominance position.     The supply chain strategy chosen for the power tool company is a long term partnering relationship with few suppliers. The long term vision of the company is to make quality products and constantly stay ahead of the competition with innovation. The best way to accomplish this strategic long term goal is to partner with key suppliers that operate using a strategy of long term thinking based on trust and transparency. Ray Kroc was one of the pioneers on forming partnerships with the management teams of his suppliers back in 1955 (Vitasek & Manrodt 2012). Ray Kroc defined the McDonald’s supply chain partnerships with his suppliers as a “system” with everyone working together to drive costs out of the supply chain. This philosophy has proved tried and true for over 50 years and is what makes McDonald’s the successful company it is today. By partnering with few suppliers and building trust between the two organizations the customer and supplier can work together to better understand the drivers of the supply chain costs. There are many advantages of using a long term partnering supply chain strategy over some of the other strategies adopted by other companies. One of the major advantages of partnering with few suppliers is that you are able to build strong relationships with your supply base and both the supplier and customer grow the business together. One of Ray Kroc’s famous quotes was, “none of us is as good as all of us.” (Vitasek & Manrodt 2012). Having few suppliers will create a competitive advantage through innovation, quicker lead times, better inventory management and working together to drive costs out of the supply chain. If your suppliers understand your business model and trust that they will be your primary supplier for the long term they will invest capital into their company with the expectation that innovative ideas will drive revenue for all involved.
