Superbowl Myths
The Superbowl, one of the most anticapated events of the year, is capable of being one of the all time greatest myths ever. It is an awe inspiring event that captivates viewers once a year, leaving them anticipating for an even greater event the following year. The Superbowl is a conglomerate of highly intensified passions shared by the vast part of society. The game itself embodies the feelings and the current values shown by society. According to Joseph Campbell's four functions that are a neccessity for a "properly operating" myth, the superbowl is an excellent candidate to become the myth that will give foundation to the future generation. The norms and standards of society go unnoticed by many athletes throughout the country, who believe that the game acts as a platform for the expression of their own individuality. As every fans are awed by each and every personality that walks the field, a greater amount of influence is granted to the athletes. They are shown as "respectable" figures that are equivalant to our modern day gods. This thought process is an exact depiction of Campbell's third rule. By putting an extremely god like sterotype on athletes we are creating a social order where athletes are the elites. Other qualifications that are needed for a progressive society areleft behind and the vast majority of society dreams of becoming a world famous athlete. It's not that athletes aren't great, just that their shouldn't be so much commotion for a career which may as well last a few short …show more content…
These ads literally affect how an individual proceeds to carry on with his life. Campbell's final function for a myth, is that the myth should be able to impress on the learner a guide of how one should carry on with life. The ads depicted in the superbowl are precisely that. Each ad is perfectly created so as to leave a lasting impression on the viewer, that will in some shape or form influence the viewers future decisions.     Imagine 96.9 million people watching the same thing, ingesting copious amounts of food and beer, and cheering maliciously for a squad that may or may not be their team of choice. I grew up in South Africa where the Super bowl is not nearly as big as it is in the United States. I was naive to the idea of watching any big game besides the World Cup. When I moved to the US I did not know what the Super bowl was. 198 countries watch the Super bowl and it is aired in 25 different languages across the world. I can’t help but think to myself that this is just a game and I don’t really care who wins, even though my surrounding suggested otherwise. I am sitting in a room full of diehard Seahawks fans. All of the furniture has been moved to each wall in the little room so that everyone can see the big flat screen TV. Beers are cracked, chip bags are opened, and we are about to watch the most watched TV program in United States history, the Super Bowl. Bronco’s fans are turned away and the guys roar at them as they try to enter the small apartment. “If you are not supporting the Seahawks you can stand up and get the hell out” one of my friends yelled as non-supporters walked away. Bud Light is the beer of choice in the room and Doritos are the chip of choice. As the game is about to start the room ignites and everyone is immediately fired up. The commercials play through the loud chatter in the apartment and they seem to be unimportant except for a few that are considered memorable.
