Assignment:

While you read To Kill a Mockingbird, note and annotate passages that you think are significant. Mark that book!

1. The goal is to note your thoughts about selected quotes as you read.
2. While you are reading, you should notice thought-provoking ideas that make you stop and ponder because you find relationships to the previous readings.
3. In this assignment, you will keep notes to capture some of these ideas and give your opinion and interpretation of them.

Dialectical Journal Assignments for To Kill a Mockingbird

Select a minimum of 20 quotes from this novel that you feel have a special meaning, interest, or impact, and type them in the left hand column of your journal. Be sure you note the page number. On the right hand side, record your thoughts, feelings, responses, or reflections. Label your responses using the strategies listed below. Be sure to include Sheriff Tate’s remark in regards to arresting Boo, “Well, it’d be sort of like shootin’ a mockingbird, wouldn’t it?”

Limit your responses to four sentences. Choose only one method of response for each quote; however, you must use each of the following at least once.

Use the following codes to label your responses the quotes you have chosen:
(Q) Question- Ask about something in the passage that is unclear.
(C) Connect- Make a connection to your life, the world, or another text.
(P) Predict- Anticipate what will occur based on what’s in the passage.
(CL) Clarify- Answer earlier questions or confirm/disaffirm a prediction.
(R) Reflect- Think deeply about what the passage means in a broad sense- not just to the characters in the story. What conclusions can you draw

    In the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, the residents seem to have all been infected by the same disease. Harper Lee, the author of the very famous novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has used several ways of portraying this idea and is able to convince readers that her characters really do have some sort of ‘illness,’ an illness which affects people’s thoughts on how others should be treated. The novel highlights several issues including racism, childhood, injustice and more as Scout, the protagonist, reflects on her life in Maycomb as a child.     In chapter six; Jem and Dill’s’ inquisitive’ natures lead them to become rebellious. Their plan was to trespass into Boo Radley’s property in order to understand more about the personality of this ‘mysterious’ character. Scout joins them on their night-time exploration because she is afraid of being left out. Due to the nature in which they entered the house, Nathan Radley-Boo Radley’s brother shoots at them as he thought his house was attacked by burglars. In chapter six of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, Harper Lee cleverly uses a variety of literary techniques and devices to create tension prior to the shooting. This essay discusses the language devices used and its effectiveness on the reader of the text. The techniques that Harper Lee predominately used in chapter six include short sentences and also dramatic and effective words.
