It is November 11th, 1918. I live in Nebraska. I’m 12 years old. My mother and my siblings were coming home from Britain to visit my grandmother on the Lusitania RMS, but they haven’t ever come home. I was taking care of of our farm. We usually get a profit of eight million dollars a year from our farm. My father fought in the war, he never came home either. I think it will be a whole new beginning for me.
Later that week, some lawyer came to my family’s farm, and said I am too little to keep my family’s farm but am old enough to live alone. I have five months to sell the farm and move into a new house. I decided to keep one thing from each of my family members and take all the money from our bank, house, and the money I have from selling the house. I work one day a week. I only live two blocks from the trading post. Before the war started I got a good education from my mother. While she and I did chores together she taught me how to do complicated math and read. So I have the most complicated job in the trading post, which is to count all the items, put them away, and make sure everything is the right price. I get paid around ten dollars a week. I don’t mind because I basically have more money to myself than I can live for.
It is October, it has been nearly a year after the war. Newspaper writers came to my house this morning before I left for work on Friday. They asked me how do I feel after all the changes I’ve been through. I said I have nothing, and want nothing to do with them. Even though I do have opinions and answers to all of those questions. I do feel lonely, and scared. I still wish Mother could still hold me and rock me to bed at night, when the lightning and thunder
