To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times by sight and sound even during nap times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. I am certified in First Aid and CPR, which makes me knowledgeable of caring for accidents or injuries.…

When I first think of a childhood injury I think of a child falling down and injuring themselves in some way. But injury goes above and beyond that simple way of thinking. Injury is a comprehensive term, it covers a wide range of health problems each of which have different dynamics and require a different type of intervention (Baker, 1984). Injuries are categorized under 2 basic categories they are either intentional or unintentional. Unintentional injuries often happen by road traffic injuries poisonings, falls, fires and burns, and drownings. Intentional injuries often occur by a family member or partner, an acquaintance, or a stranger. They can also be self-directed or done through a collective violence (WHO, 2008).…

In an attempt to deal with the high level of personal injury litigation in the Irish courts and tackle the high cost of insurance the government introduced The Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act in 2003. 2 The act came into effect in June 2004 and established the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB). PIAB is primarily governed under the Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003 (amended 2007) the Civil Liability and Courts Act 2004 and more recently The Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011. Its duty is to asses all claims for personal injury as an independent statutory body and “without the need for legal proceedings”1. Its purpose is to streamline what was previously a lengthy and costly process and reduce the length of time taken to receive compensation. If we look at the statics in the annual report we see that in 2011 the total yearly charge for the Labour Courts costs had been €10.68m this compared to ligation fees based on comparable work at as estimated €56.45m. 6…
