Summary Of Wonder By R. J. Palacio
R.J. Palacio writes that being kind is not enough. “Kinder than is necessary, Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.” -R.J. Palacio The book Wonder shows the life of a boy with a deformed face and his sister and a few other friends. The author showed the overall message of the book by having Summer and Jack helping August work his way through the hardship of middle school. It’s them that needed help getting used to him, how people reacted to him and how he reacts back. Everyone should be kind and treat others the way you want to be treated.
Someone kind does not always have to express big acts of kindness. They could be a quiet leader and just be there for someone or do a small act of kindness that people notice. “We carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of kindness.” (pg. 306) We are the ones with the choice of how we can affect someone else’s life. Another part of the book said, “The universe takes care of all its birds.” (pg. 204) This shows how people take care of other people and how they can cheer you up. Jack for instance, befriends August even though he does a few stupid things to hurt August. He also becomes one of August’s best friends and laugh, plays and see’s him as a normal person.

It always shows, and that's uncool.” (pg.313) Amos is friends with Julian who is a mean person however he shows that trying to be too cool doesn’t come off as nice. Amos is helpful in the end by helping up August and comforting him in a time of hardship. “Here’s what I think: the only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way.” (pg.3) Some people at the end of the book realize that August is an extraordinary human being just like everyone else and someone who has survived the impossible. He knows he’s not ordinary but, is more prone to it because people see him as a

They also talk about how her mother gotten a sperm donor, and Jack is not her actual father. “I couldn’t give your mum what she wanted more than anything.” (336). An example of this is shown when the Joads decide to camp near a ditch. Ivy and Sairy Wilson were fixing a car when the Joad family arrived, and though they could have turned the family away easily they welcomed the Joads. This example continues when the Joad’s grandfather dies while the family is camping with the Wilsons. The Wilsons treat the Joad family as their own family, even from seconds after Granpa’s death both Sairy and Ivy comfort and advise the family. Steinbeck shows how Sairy takes care of Grandma when he writes, “Sairy took Granma by the arm and led her outside… Sairy took her to a mattress lying on the ground and sat her down on it” (Steinbeck 138). This kindness allows the family to grieve fairly quickly, and prepare for more losses along the way. A second instance where the family encounters is during their stay at Weedpatch, for the family is not used to the unity and cooperation the camp offers. Through Weedpatch, the Joads were given an almost comfortable lifestyle. The family was given food, shelter, work, and a community. The camp helped to strengthen the Joad family, and fueled them for the next part of their journey. The last example of kindness was how Mrs. Wainwright helped Rose of Sharon during her labour, as if Rose of Sharon was her own daughter. Without Mrs. Wainwright’s help through her labour, even more complications could have arose within Rose of Sharon’s birth, possibly more than the death of her infant. The Joads would not have made it without the kindness the encountered on their journey to the…

Children in August’s grade treated him as an outsider at the beginning of “Wonder”. Many claimed he had the “plague” and wouldn’t dare to make any physical contact with August, as shown on page 120; “Anyone who accidentally touches August has only thirty seconds to wash their hands or find hand sanitizer before they catch the Plague.” However, this does not consider that the attitudes towards Auggie reversed by the end of “Wonder”. To prove this, evidence is given on page 308; “In fact, and I don’t mean to brag here, but it kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me.” Despite people being fearful of even touching Auggie at the beginning of the year, people became more comfortable with him and even chose to come and get close to him for the group picture.…

Thinking about the world today and its society, lots of people are judgmental and hypocritical. Yet, some may also be very conscious of every step they take. Having the courage is not constantly running in the face of danger. Nor is courage not necessarily risking your life, in public, hopeless or futile. Courage can be a private thing and do so with hope that things will get better or that their sacrifices mean something. Being the perfect person and not having the courage to go out and live freely is constantly drilled into people’s mind of what they have to change. Continuously having to be looked at and getting disparaged is something 5th grader Auggie Pullman, in the novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, has to go through, throughout his daily…

The few times where the author gives the reader glimpses into Julian’s home-life or backstory, the opinions of his parents demonstrate where Julian gets his attitude. Jack tells his mom that Julian’s mom actually photoshopped August’s face out of the class picture and gave out copies (158). This action mirrors the disgust for August Julian expresses. Some of the other kids’ parents who are more accepting provide a sharp contrast to Julian’s mom. For example, Charlotte says “Just so you know, my mom thinks Julian’s mom is a total idiot. She said she thinks people like her are more concerned about what their kids’ class pictures look like than doing the right thing” (172). In the end, his ignorant parents could not accept the changes happening in the school and decide to transfer Julian out…
