My first choice for this assignment is Harvey Bear. Harvey Bear was a wealthy farmer who lived near Churchville in Augusta County with his slaves and family members. He kept a diary in which he wrote small entries vaguely describing something going on in his life at the time. The reason I chose Harvey Bear is because when I think of a diary I imagine long passages about someone’s day. But, Harvey Bear’s diary is just a bunch of small notes and when you read them it’s almost like you can abstractedly see his life through his eyes.…

“The Documented Life” written by author Sherry Turkledec in December, 2013. She starts off walking through the city of Los Angeles, CA with actor and comedian Aziz Ansari. The two are discussing some of their mutual interest they share on the psychology of texting. As they were walking, they couldn’t help but notice how often Mr. Ansari’s fans would approach him demanding autographs. Mr. Ansari says he would rather have a conversation about his fans taste in music, how he performed, or his stand-ups, rather than autographs. Needless to say his fans weren’t satisfied. It’s like they need that autograph to be happy. Turkledec has studied people and mobile technology for 15 years. She interviewed people on their selfies they take on their phones, that’s how she keeps track of their life. She goes over different points ranging from how one doesn’t take the time to appreciate the experience right in front of them, how technology is changing us, and the lack of communication skills. While Turkledec talks about the distractions of cell phones, this leaves us wondering how this is going to affect younger adults later on in life.…

I, Napoleon Bonaparte, have finally succeeded! I have become the new strong leader of France. Thanks to the Revolution, I advanced from the position of lieutenant in the artillery to a full-fledged general, which changed my life entirely and gave me a world full of power. I am known to be our nation's savior and am treated as a hero to everyone. Yes, I know people do not like dictatorship and a complete ruler over the whole, but I am going to be a dictator with the utmost power. But I am not that foolish to be so obvious. I will hold a referendum in which all French men can vote to either approve or disapprove of my new regime. I am sure almost all would accept my power since, who with brains would really go against such a man as me already treated a hero by the majority? They dare not...…
