“The Mysterious Benedict Society” by Trenton Lee Stewart is another book about those endearing orphans with great abilities that seem to have become a genre of it’s own. This time it is a book about 4 children who pass a “gifted test.” It is not just any gifted test though, it is a test to find the smartest and best children to help Mr Benedict on a secret mission. Mr. Benedict becomes a father figure to these children during this book. The four children are Kate Wetherall, Reynie Muldoon, George Washington or “Sticky”, and Constance Contraire.

Reynie becomes the leader of this talented group. They are sent to a school where Mr. Benedict’s evil twin is the principal. The Learning Institute For the Very Enlightened, or L.I.V.E. which is evil spelled backwards. He has created a machine called the Whisperer to manipulate other people’s minds using children’s minds. He can take over the world with this machine. With the help of morse code from Mr. Benedict and the secret agent Mulligan, who has no memory, they set out to defeat the machine.

He is the leader and the one that is able to solve puzzles, and riddles the fastest. Sticky is the extremely smart one that earned his nickname because every piece of information he reads automatically sticks. Kate is the agile one that gets them into and out of lots of trouble. With her quick feet and bucket of necessities she is an excellent escape artist and a big part of the team. Constance is the littlest and as her name suggests, quite stubborn and difficult.
