Summary Of Shakespeare's Warm Bodies
Warm Bodies is the story of R, a zombie who searches for meaning in his undead life. After eating her boyfriend’s brains, he falls in love with Julie, a human. The novel is told from R’s point of view, which is incredibly entertaining, charismatic, and humorous. As you may have figured out by the names R and Julie, the story borrows from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to create a retelling of the classic play with a modern twist. The zombies in the novel are not your typical sort. They are not completely mindless, as evident by R’s coherent thought. All of their processes are slowed down to the point of their undead existence. By eating brains, it is a way for them to feel alive again, as they vividly hallucinate as their victim’s memories

R’s human side comes through more and more as his love for Julie starts to combat his zombie side. It is an extremely entertaining journey to watch R regain his humanity. The scope and stakes of the story escalate from there (and I am leaving out the details for spoiler reasons). The way Marion writes it is also wildly captivating in a way that I cannot describe. Even though the story seems rough in summary, the author introduces these things sparingly, tying them all together with R’s thoughts, which keeps the novel flowing, and had me turning the page non-stop (which is a very rare feat for me). While I really liked the novel, I realize that it is far from perfect for everyone. The novel would be seen as sub-sufficient to those who hate love stories, Romeo and Juliet, zombies, and more. Even though the novel is well written, these elements may be enough to severely impact Warm Bodies’s likability for readers who are looking for something more in their comfort zones. For the average audience member, I would highly recommend Warm Bodies. It is well written, has a unique and compelling story, and knows just when to tell a joke or poke fun at itself. However, if you think the premise of a zombie falling in love with a human is just too silly to wrap your head around, I doubt the novel will change your mind.
