In this project I am investigating how Empress Theodora become so powerful, what ways did she use? The author of The Secret History, the only source of information about Theodora, was named Procopius. He was a great historian of the Byzantine Empire, who was born in Caesarea on the coast of Palestine in 500 A.D., and died around 565 A.D. After his death, only two other books written by Procopius were found: History of the Wars and Buildings. The Secret History was originally written in Latin, published by Niccolo Alamanni in 1632, and translated into English by G.A. Williamson in 1996. Procopius has very negative things to say about Empress Theodora. He felt disdain towards her and her husband, Justinian. Even though he worked with them, he…

Women cherished their honor. They believed that it was their honor and their virtue that proclaimed their worth to men. Before the rape, Lucretia was considered to be an ideal wife. She would be found spinning in the middle of the night helping the slaves, when most wives would be out having fun (LVII). Men thought their wives belonged in the house. After Lucretia was raped she described herself as spoiled. She was ashamed that she was raped by the Prince of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus. She did not want to humiliate herself as well as her husband with her dishonor. She said that she should be punished because of the prince’s actions. Once she was raped, she was no longer the ideal wife, because of her shameful state she took her life. Women believed that if their virtue is taken then they are no longer worth anything to Roman society and in the case of Lucretia death was the only solution.…

Procopius is considered to be a historian, who lived in the 6th century. From his works we are able to visit back into the Byzantine Empire, when Emperor Justinian reigned. Through the three books he created: “History of the Wars”, “The Buildings of Justinian”, and “The Secret History”, he is our primary source of information about the reign of Emperor Justinian. After reading “The Secret History”, I found the tone of the book to be different than that of a classical historian’s book. Procopius tells us that he wants the true events of this time to be recorded, for all to know the misdeeds of the tyrants, so that “those who in the future, if it so happens,…

In ancient Greece, women were virtually invisible to those outside the home and their reputation was best when there was “the least possible talk about you among men, whether in praise or blame” (Thucydides 1.45.2). There was a Greek Proverb that said “a woman knew two great moments of her life: her marriage and her death” (Powell, 40). In ancient Greek culture, women were normally seen as objects for marriage and childbearing and in literature were often depicted with an uncontrollable sexual appetite causing them to lie and scheme. The Pandora myth affirms the gender dynamics of ancient Greek culture. This is shown by the way Hesiod describes Pandora, his attitude toward women, and his opinion about women’s roles and work.…

These imperial women are powerful, scheming, erratic, dangerous women who are not technically in power, but heavily advise those who are. Messalina is an example of these women. She was an imperial Roman lady, a great nymphomaniac, who used sexual favours and blackmail to keep her senators loyal. ‘She bore him two children, but then lost interest in Claudius and took a number of lovers’ 7.Messalina, through these strategies, had created a new style of politics. Even though she will be remembered in history as the great nymphomaniac, she cannot be denied of the fact that she was a great influence, even on Claudius – her husband. The problem for her is the fact that she was not allowed into the court room. But Messalina could overcome this by listening to cases intra cubiculum, which literally means in the bedroom of the Emperor. This was also another way that she could influence Claudius. This was only available to her as she had gained the freedom from the Palace guards, and they helped her influence these political events such as the fall of her own stepfather, Silanus…

Roman culture was largely based on the citizens’ honor. Honor was one of the most important aspects of a Roman citizen’s life. Honor was very important to Roman society. Lucretia displayed her honor in two ways, first she served Sextus Tarquinius and his men, and then she killed herself after being raped by Sextus Tarquinius, the son of the king. “I will absolve myself of blame, and I will not free myself from punishment. No women shall use Lucretia as her example of dishonor.” Conlatinus tried to persuade her saying she did not have to kill herself and she had done no wrong. She could not live with herself because she was violated. “They promised her that they would pursue him,…

Empress Theodora was one of the most influential women of her time. Her husband, Emperor Justinian I, listened to her advice regarding political decisions in the empire. She essentially co-ruled with Justinian, aiding in the rights for women by outlining their rights and expanding upon them. In this way, she was somewhat like an early feminist. During her service to her country as empress, Theodora protected the rights of the serfs and poor. She attended to the rights of prostitutes in particular by closing brothels, creating safe spaces for women, and passing laws to prohibit forced prostitution (presently known as rape). Additionally, she passed laws that expanded the rights of women in divorce and redacted an unfair law that had allowed women to be put to death for committing adultery. Finally, she protected persecuted Monophysites, building churches that served as refuges.…

One main thing people in this world strive and desire for is power. It’s what strongly drives humans to make themselves feel privileged. In the play, Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, Portia is a character that seems to struggle to free herself from the power of her husband, Brutus. In addition, to being a woman, she is viewed at differently and treated differently than men. Women are the weak figures of the world and hold different responsibilities than of men.…

The novel The Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd represents the maturation and development of one main central character. Before Kidd wrote this novel, she graduated from Texas Christian University with a B.S. degree in nursing, and she worked in nursing for many years. Later in life, in Kidd’s mid-twenties, she grew to love writing, and she eventually attended school for writing and obtained a degree in this profession. The novel, The Secret Life of Bees, started off as a short story that Kidd wrote, until she decided to turn the short story into an actual novel, she published in 2002. Although this is not Kidd’s first novel written, she often focuses on the development of one main character in her novels. In this novel, Lily Owens,…

Nature takes time to “assemble[s] more beauty/ than a thousand of the most beautiful girls possess” (II.1182-1883 p. 89). Although Silentius is genotypically a female, her beauty as a female does not escape once she portrays her life as a male. Her beauty entices the wife of King Evan, Eufeme. The outward appearance of Silentius is intriguing. For Eufeme, she “pretended that she couldn’t eat/ that she couldn’t stand the least bit of noise/ or bare anyone come near her—except the harper” (IV. 3732-3735 p. 189). The way Eufeme acts towards Silentius is a characteristic of how one in love feels. To the reader, the lust after Silentius that Eufeme has is dramatic irony, as the reader knows what the identity of Silentius is behind closed doors. The harper, being Silentius, was not interested in the admiration of Eufeme because she is a female and is interested in…
