Summary Of Paul Showing Compassion
Showing compassion, being able to feel the pain of another in a time where they are in pain, being able to show sympathy is exactly what Paul and his regime exhibited to the enemy Russians. The group of Paul was finally on top, they even had some Prisoners of War with them, what do they do? Display compassion. Give the adversary some food and even some cigarette ends. Talk to them. Show them the respect they would want. Treat them the way Paul's regime would want to be treated. In addition to Paul showing Heroism, his whole team followed close behind, supporting Paul in his Heroic decisions and acts.     Since he is one the intellectual path and university bound. At the beginning of the war he starts to shift to where the id becomes a driving force for how he acts. This is shown during basic training when he beats up Himmelstoss (Remarque pg 48-50). While Paul feels some sorrow for his actions he sees them as justified and he believes that he was in the right, while Himmelstoss got what he deserved due to how he treated the soldiers. After this incident Paul starts to listen to his id more and more. When he is on the front he uses the id as a way to cope with what he is seeing and what he is doing (Watson). When his primal instincts come out and he is listening to the id he does things that appeal to his pleasure seeking side.     Being that Paul and his friends are still teenagers, they can crack jokes and banter with each other during the hardest of times. “But by far the most important result was that it awakened in us a strong, practical sense of esprit de corps, which in the field developed into the finest thing that arose out of the war-comradeship” (26-27).     When one of Paul’s best friends Kemmerich dies, Paul is the one who has to tell his mom about the bad news. One quote that points to this is, “I must go and see Kemmerich’s mother… This quaking, sobbing woman who shakes me and cries out on me: ‘Why are you living then, when he is dead?’” (181). Paul had enough bravery to talk to his dead friend’s mother about how her son died. Paul has to lie to Kemmerich’s mother or else she would have been even more devastated than she had been when she heard the bad news. Paul was devastated when his friend died but stayed brave because he knew with war came death. An example that also proves this is, “Kat falls.     To survive the war, soldiers have to sacrifice any logical instinct or emotion and fight on animal instinct. They start out level-minded, but when they reach the front all that changes, as Paul believes when he says, “We march up, moody or good tempered soldiers – we reach the zone where the front begins and become on instinct human animals” (56). This animal instinct is necessary for their survival. When they are put in a situation concerning warfare, their mind adapts to the environment and begins to think of the enemy as targets, rather than human beings.
