Miracle at Philadelphia
By: Catherine Drinker Bowen

Joseph Winker
3/5/05

Miracle at Philadelphia is a book about the Constitutional Convention in the United States. The chapters are arranged in the order that the events happened during the convention. Mrs. Bowen, the author, made the events and the people of the convention seem more interesting than I thought they would be. There are many things that I really enjoyed reading in my book. Some of those things would have to be just how accurate everything seemed to be. A good example of this would be how Mrs. Bowen put all of the dates and historical events into the arguments that were held in making the Constitution. Another thing that I liked was just how the author made me

Books are precious pieces that improve one’s knowledge and help define one’s personality by relating themselves to characters within the text. As Vladimir Nabokov said in Good Readers and Good Writers “The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.”(Nabokov, 973) I always believed that by reading a book you become one with yourself by somehow feeling all the problems of the characters and become completely absorbed in their world, therefore feeling like you have a purpose as you read.…

Books, they take you on a journey. A journey of fear, hope, adventure, love and sadness. Some books are fiction, and others take you on a real adventure where things that seem completely fake are real. I was the oldest delegate in the Philadelphia Convention. Other than George Washington I was the best man in America. I was born into a poor family and became an inventor, scientist, diplomat and publisher. My career in public service was long, I serviced as an ambassador to England and France and I was also a Governor of Pennsylvania. I was a compromiser, I brought delegates together. I favored the strong national government that the United States had, I was a firm believer that the framers should trust the judgment of the people. Although I didn’t agree with everything in the constitution, I believe that no other convention would come up with a better document.…

Many people read books, and they perceive truths and realize ideals from them. In turn, readers are given to discussions about the topic of a book they recently finished, or they may recommend to other people books that made a strong impression on them. Why do people regard some books as important and make them into a guidebook for their lives? The reason is that books enlighten people and teach them essential things they need to carry out, understand, or enjoy their lives. Nevertheless, it is not true that all people like all books; in other words, a good story has something special, often its central characteristics, such as the plot or the theme. These are the indispensable features of a good story because these features have to be well harmonized to create a reading experience beloved by their readers.…

Literature can be written in numerous ways; some people prefer novels and some may prefer comics. The question is, what makes that piece of literature good? The answer to this question is entirely subjective. Think about some of your favorite books and why you love them so much. By comparing your favorite books, there may be some similarities coming up again and again as you think about what you loved about them. These similarities involve realism; no matter if you are reading fantasy or paranormal, there should be some elements of reality to make the story believable. The characters of the book make a connection that makes you stand behind the characters decisions. The plot is the “make-up” ideal in all stories to construct the story that you love so much. With the three major works we have studied this semester (Hamlet, Sarahs’ Key, and Fifth Business), Fifth Business is the overall best piece of literature because it consist of realism, likable characters and a plot full of mystery that forms the complete journey.…
