Summary Of Heart Of A Champion
In Heart of a Champion by Carl Deuker, Seth, a baseball player learns about life through baseball. Seth’s father dies when Seth is very young so he never has a chance to know him. This is paramount to how he lives the rest of his life. Seth lives in Redwood City. After his father’s funeral, Seth walks to Henry Ford School because he did not want to see anybody he knew. When he gets there is life changes forever. He meets a kid his age named Jimmy Winters and his father. Jimmy invites him to play baseball with them and Seth agrees. Seth makes a few mistakes and they help him correct his mistakes. Seth keeps going back to practice with the winters every weekend and he is not only getting better at baseball he is starting to love the game. He is starting to change because of Jimmy and his father. When little league starts Seth is on a minor league team and Jimmy is on a major league team so they cannot practice together anymore on the weekends. One day Seth gets moved up to Jimmy’s major league team because their second baseman got hurt. Seth was stoked that he got moved up but it did not last long because when he got up to bat he struck out. After the game Seth and Jimmy went to work every day they could to help Seth hit better. But Jimmy continues to drink and it is suspended form the team twice for it. When he comes back the team has a chance to contend for the district championship.     This book started off as the Yankees just winning their third World Series in just four years. In the locker room everyone was celebrating as Derek Jeter was trying to get to the exit so he could find his parents. Derek's parents have been helping him to achieve his goals. As a child he was required to do his homework before he did anything else. He also had to sign a contract each year about his goals and the rules he needed to follow to be able to participate in sports. In high school Derek played baseball and basketball at Kalamazoo Central. As a child he grew up in Michigan but was always a Yankee fan. While in high school he was watched by many scouts including scouts from the Yankees. His life goal was to play baseball for the New York Yankees. He first announced this goal to his parent one night when he was very young and his parents sat him down even thought it was very late to talk to him about this. They told him that he could do it but it would be very difficult and he would need to obtain goals and abide by certain rules. This guidance from his parents caused him to be noticed by the Yankees and in the 1st round of the draft in 1992 he was chosen 6th overall by the New York Yankees. As a Minor League player he would create many errors and was sad almost every night. When he got to his room he would call his parents and talk to them. In 1996 he made his major league debut against the Seattle Mariners. Ever since that game he has been playing short stop for the New York Yankees. Derek's mom went to his debut game that day in Seattle. As Derek was growing up at least one of his parents was at all of his games. If his sister had a game on the same day then one parent would go to each game. One event that impacted Derek's life a lot is when his good friend Shanti Lal died in a car accident on May, 4, 1997. Shanti was only 23 at the time and Derek was very shocked by the news. In 1996 Derek started the Turn 2 Foundation. This charity helps point children away…

    Analysis of Batter My Heart

    In the poem “Batter my heart, three-personed God”, John Donne portrays a troubled speaker who is experiencing a spiritual disturbance in accepting his current faith and who is therefore expressing his desire to renew his faith in God and his religion. Throughout this religious sonnet, Donne employs the use of metaphors which provide clues as to what the speaker is feeling during the poem and paradoxes to exemplify the speaker’s request. Based on the first statement of the poem alone, it is clear that the lines to follow will involve some sort of religious conflict, as shown by the command said by the speaker, “Batter my heart, three-personed God”. In relation to the rest of the poem, one can conclude that the “three-personed God” to which the speaker is referring is a metaphor for the Holy Trinity of the Christian religion; the use of the word “batter” serves as a forerunner to the later violent requests of the speaker. The simile used in line 5 of the poem which compares the speaker to a usurped town shows that the speaker is in an undesired and vulnerable position, just as a city would be just after being appropriated by a foreign enemy. In this metaphorical sense, the speaker is asking God to defend him and reclaim him from this unknown enemy. This idea can be later confirmed in lines 7 and 8 where the speaker directly speaks of God’s attempt to “recapture” his soul. Although this acknowledgement of a divine intervention is evident to the speaker, he nonetheless states that “Reason, [God’s] viceroy in me…/ proves weak or untrue,” and that this instrument of God has itself been “captived”. As a result of this lack of faith, the speaker states that his efforts to accept God have been futile when faced with this “enemy”. The usage of metaphors and similes within the poem have the overall effect of helping to set up the condition of the speaker in order to provide reason for his…
