GS is a woman in her early 30’s. GS is a scholar, a doctor, a daughter, a sister, and liked among her peers. However, GS is suffering from a series of medical conditions from the physical and mental aspect. To be more specific, GS has been coping with depression for many years and suicidal ideations for a couple of years. In addition, GS was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia since she was a teenager. The onset of GS’s depression episodes came about by the age of 13. By this time, GS sensed that her family would split up as there was tension between her parents. The tension stemmed from the family moving to another part of Europe, where GS’s father was offered a promotion. As all members of the family had to assimilate to their new environment, there was reluctance…
My client was diagnosed with depression three years ago but her depression has been increasing since her life changes. To assess my client’s depression, I will us the Beck Depression Inventory. The Beck Depression Inventory is an assessment that can tell the severity of my depression. According to Adewuya and Aloba (2007), “the BDI [3] which is a 21-item self-rated questionnaire consists of a series of ordered statements relating to particular symptoms of depression. Each statement is scored from 0 to 3 in terms of intensity giving a maximum score of 63” (pg. 288). I will use the assessment as a baseline and will be able to do the assessment again to see if her depression is improving with therapy. If my client starts at 27, one goal for…
As already stated every individual is unique and we cannot assume of otherwise. There for every individual. However there is a basic skeletons from which we can build on ( assessment, diagnosis and therapy)…
Solomon’s memoir, Anatomy of Melancholy, was an amazing and clear view and portrayal of the disease, depression. Solomon, gifted as a great writer before his depression, was able to articulate the debilitating symptoms of depression on the mind, the body, and I would go as far as to say, the soul. He covers his journey of depression while sharing very intimate details of his thoughts, other’s stories, treatment, and statistics of the illness. As someone who is studying psychology, my understanding of his experiences have shifted after looking at it through the 4 d’s, the lens of a therapist, and as a unbiased reader.…
As much as this appears to be true with adults; it appears to be equally, if not more greatly true with adolescent females. It is during this period of development that females are seeking autonomy. They are beginning to choose their own friends, deciding on their own clothing, beginning to work on their own financial base, and starting to decide what direction they may wish to follow in the future. The adolescent female is often struggling with separating from family while also being a part of the same family unit. As Feldman (2011) describes it, this period is a time when “adolescents increasingly seek autonomy, independence and a sense of control over their lives”. It may be picking out that first apartment away from home. It may be purchasing that first car or landing that first job. It may be picking that first boyfriend or going to that first party without having to ask permission from a parent. What may simply seem a chance to make a choice or decision: To the adolescent female this may be one more stressor to add to her life as she struggles with personal identity and self-worth. Dixon (2009) points out that “as early as age 11, young adolescents begin forming their self-concept and must cope with increasing expectations from parents, friends, school, and society”. Dixon (2009) also shares research from Burt, Stein, and others. Their research concludes “that from early adolescence through adulthood…

The article I choose was “How Mental Illness is Misrepresented in the Media” Written By Kirstin Fawcett. It says how TV shows, video games, movies, and comics wronging portrayal disorders such as bipolar, schizophrenia and depression. They usually show the mental illness stereotypical or the negative. The mentally ill are commonly described as incompetent, dangerous, slovenly and others kind stereotypes. Some Tv shows and movie make an effort to portray a more realistic characterization of people with mental illness. Some examples are “Homeland” where bipolar disorder is shown and “A beautiful Mind” where schizophrenia is shown, this TV show and movie displays the reality of this two disorder and not the typical stereotype. Some inaccurate…
Some things in life tend to be very challenging to overcome and depression happens to be one of the many obstacles in life. We try to look for an easy way out so the pain doesn’t last forever, but the easiest route might not always be the best decision in the situation you’re facing. I believe the best way to completely destroy the harsh mental and physical feeling of depression is to give it time. Time heals all wounds and bruises, you could be at your lowest point and those times you are weak and have every reason to give up on yourself and others but it won’t always be there. Depression is that small voice in the back of your mind that televises the inferior mood of your everyday activities. It’s certainly like a sneak attack, it destroys…
In the article, Depression and the Elderly, Stevens points out that the elderly are more likely to have depression. Stevens gives the statistic that approximately 20 percent of the population that is over the age of 55 is going to endure mental health concerns (Stevens, 2013). This could be because the elderly is not receiving the proper care that they should be receiving for having mental health issues. Even though people believe that healthy means that you are free from diseases or an actual illness that is not at all what it means. To be healthy is to be physically and mentally healthy. The brain is…

Mental health disorders can affect anyone at any given time in any age group or demographic. Disabilities can range from mild to the most severe and characteristically, run the gamut. Centuries ago, there was a stigma with mental health where imprisonment was thought to be the logical solution. Nineteenth century insane asylums held the promise of compassionate rehabilitation; unfortunately, lapses in funding prohibited this dream from becoming a reality (“Kirkbride Buildings”, 2001-2012). Dr. Kirkbride, advocate of the tenets of Moral Treatment, foresaw a treatment facility that was idealistic in grandeur and architecture where he hoped to create a place of healing for the mentally ill. With plenty of fresh air and open spaces, “these asylums replaced cruder methods of coping with the mentally ill, such as confining them to prisons or poorhouses where they were often abused and their special needs were rarely met” (“Kirkbride Buildings”, 2001-2012).…
"Adventures in Depression" by Allie Brosh is a moving essay that is eye opening showing that depression doesn't always have a reason making it even more crippling. This essay is on a blog called "Hyperbole and a Half" Through out there are several illustrations emphasizing the effects and showing how our brain can work against us. "Adventures in Depression" is a well written essay because of the truth that is shown through the illustrations, metaphors, and the sad but too real of an ending that is brings her to an even worse point in he life and she doesn’t realize it.…
Throughout my high school years I dealt with depression. At the start of my sophomore year, I was diagnosed with clinical depression, a type of depression that is linked with fatigue. While in social settings, internally there was an urge to lay down and rest, while on the outside I was perky and all smiles! I was without goals and always off with friends to distract myself; feelings did not phase me because I was used to shutting them out. My mother decided after a while that I needed help to get me out of this detrimental state of mind.…
